Assignment # 2- Killing Us Softly

1. What does the term “tough guise” refer to? The term refers to males needing to put up a front and not show any sorts of vulnerabilities because of society’s standards that males need to be masculine and if they don’t they are either shamed or ridiculed. 2. How is masculinity socially constructed? Please explain. Masculinity socially is constructed through the knowledge people have and society’s teachings that males are the “alpha of the pack” because it is passed down that way. Also, by knowledge, it could be basic teachings in every household or country therefore its different but the same in some sense. 3. Do men actively participate in the social construction of masculinity? How so? A lot of males do participate in the social construction of masculinity however not all in some cases because there are many males that show there vulnerabilities in private or in the comfort of another. But the ratio of the male specie does follow the social construction of masculinity believing societies main beliefs that males aren’t superior if they show signs of vulnerabilities and its that way because even in the past the male in the household brought food to the table or was bringing in the money was brought up in modern-day society because of the knowledge we already know. 4. What are the solutions to the problems associated with the social construction of masculinity? Some issues that follow the concept of social constriction of masculinity is that men influence each other, image, identity, relationships. Men influence each other based on their beliefs so it’s turning into one statement that masculinity is what makes a male high ranking. Image, most men are afraid that their reputation to be this macho man will get tarnished so they don’t show emotions or any sign of weakness. Some men don’t exactly know who there or where they fit in society’s category of masculinity so it’s frightening if they wanna step out of the box and be who they want to be. Relationships on the other hand are a problem as well when it comes to the social construction of masculinity because in a relationship it has been taught that males are the protectors and the female is supposed to be protected and pampered.

5. Please explain how and why the social construction of masculinity is political in nature. It is political in the sense that back in the day men were given the right to vote where as women weren’t allowed to work or vote until a group of women who wanted that right took a stand and fix that issue of masculinity for the future. Its this way because its been know that men initially are stronger and more superior to women but in modern times now its quite

different because women are being acknowledged more for there superiority and given equally.

6. What is the main point of Killing us Softly? The point of Killing us Softly was to stand and challenge the new generations with the analysis of advertising so it could be taken seriously about popular culture. 7. How is femininity socially constructed? Explain It is constructed through the same method that masculinity is constructed it is beliefs and society’s popular culture being taken seriously by both males and females. 8. Do women actively participate in the social construction of femininity? How so? Yes, some do however not all females do because some like to follow their own choices and not what society believes to be true. 9. Please explain how and why the social construction of femininity is political in nature. It’s political in nature because of the popular culture portraying women should be refined and timid and to show masculinity because of how it was back in the day. 10. What are the solutions to the problems associated with the social construction of femininity? Solutions could be society understanding that the social construction of femininity isn’t based on every female and to not analyze what society believes to be true. But rather find a balance between individuals being able to show their identity without having to afraid of being shamed. 11. What is the main connection between Tough Guise and Killing Us Softly? The main connection is to show sexism and the negative and positive impacts masculinity and femininity cause to generations and to study it so it could be analyzed. 12. What are the implications of tough guise and misrepresentation when you understand them together in the same context? The implications are to acknowledge that gender plays a big role and also to help students slow down and think critically which could cause implications if not done. There needs to be understanding that no one is superior and that masculinity and femininity are only beliefs and teachings brought down by generations. The roles are constructed but it doesn’t have to that way.

13.What is your opinion of the two documentaries? Did you find them useful/informative/moving/emotional? Which one did you prefer, why? I found both documentaries interesting and very informative about masculinity and femininity. I found Tough Guise 2 more interesting because it shows the concept of masculinity and how it’s hard for males as well as females to show their own identities when social construction for the two genders are already created and used in society....
