Description

SOC 100 Online: Principles of Sociology Assignment #2 For each of the following questions, use examples from each of the readings and/or videos whenever possible to support your answers. Whenever you are asked to give an example, you need to provide your own example; examples discussed in the book will not be accepted.

1. What is impression management? Define this term, and provide an example from your own life in which this process has taken place. Answers should be approximately a few sentences (5 points) Impression management is the act of basically deciding how you want to present yourself to other people. Some things you cannot change, such as your body type or hair color, but a lot of things you can change; such as wearing makeup, wearing professional clothing, and presenting a very outgoing or personable demeanor depending on what situation you are entering/ what role you need to fill. For me, I make sure to meet every new person with an attitude of being very bubbly and fun, but when I meet with a professor, I am calm, mature and try to come off as professional as I can.

2. What is the Thomas Theorem? Define this term, and provide an example that illustrates this concept. Answers should be approximately a few sentences (5 points) The Thomas Theorem is something you hear a lot about happening, just not defined by this name. It happens when someone has been defined as something, say a delinquent, so many times that they actually become one even if that isn’t the actual role they were supposed to fulfil. A good example of this is in the move Ice Age 2, where the female mammoth actually grew up with 2 possums and thought she was one too because they told her she was. In reality, though, she was a huge mammoth hundreds of times bigger than them but just had no idea because that was all she knew.

3. (a) What are primary groups, secondary groups, in-groups, and out-groups? (b) Provide an example of each group that you currently belong to. (c) What role do groups play in the socialization process? Be sure to incorporate concepts from course readings (e.g., groupthink) in your explanation. Answers should be approximately 1-2 paragraphs (5 points) A primary group is one that is made up of few individuals who have long-term emotional relationships face to face. An example of my primary group is my best friend. She is basically my twin sister that I talk to about everything. A secondary group is a little more impersonal and mot as close but works together to achieve a certain goal. I would say that my sorority would be my secondary group. We aren’t all that close, but we see each other enough and have the same values and goals to be out best selves and we work together to keep the sorority going and

coordinate events and recruit new members. An in-group is the group of people that you like to and feel like you belong to. One example for me would be my job as a student rep on campus. The other people that I work with are like-minded and accept me because we all are equals doing the same job and are trying to inspire each other. On the other hand, an out-group is one where you don’t feel like you fit in as well. This kind of group, for me, would be the group of girls from my high school that I always felt I was competing against and was never really accepted by. The groups play a role in socialization by the way that they are introducing new and different groups of people to interact with. I float between each group pretty often and, depending on which group I am in, I will often conduct myself in a different way. It changes my impression management because I want to make a different impression to each different group.

Questions from Reading 5 in Sociology in Action (DeGregory: The Girl in the Window) 4. What was Dani’s early childhood like? Answers should be approximately a few sentences (5 point) Dani really didn’t have a “childhood” that most people assume all kids get to have. She was never taught anything through socialization since she was just always kept in a bedroom; she was extremely neglected both food-wise and social-wise.

5. Socialization refers to the process by which we teach people about their culture, their roles, their status, and so forth. What does this article suggest are the consequences of inadequate socialization during early childhood? Answers should be approximately a few sentences (5 points) Some of the consequences Dani faced as a result of not experiencing socialization are that she did not know how to communicate any wants or needs in a way that makes sense to the rest of society. She didn’t even know there was a world out here for her to enjoy; all she knew was the moldy mattress and that her life kind of sucked. Hiding your child from society and not teaching them anything about being a functioning human is, in my opinion, the worst kind of neglect because a lot of these skills cannot be taught by just telling someone, you have to be exposed to it for a long period of time to catch on....
