Avoiding Biased and Insensitive Communications

Elena Babnick BUS202: Professional & Business Communications Gregory Goussak November 16, 2020

Avoiding Biased and Insensitive Communications While reviewing avoiding bias in the APA manual that way provided, I have chosen two best ways to avoid biases in my writing and in my one on one communication with others. The manual listed seven ways to avoid biased communication. Using third person point of view is better when communicating in person or through emails to your colleagues. Because most people do not have the same experience in life as oneself it is better to use third person instead of firstperson narrative. I for one had to research this technique a bit more last week as I was marked down for using first person narrative in my last assignment when writing an email to colleague. This is what I found when googling using third person narrative instead of first-person narrative. First person uses writing such as I or me. The first-person voice is from the writer's perspective and shares emotion, thought processes, personal experiences, and reflection. For example, fifteen years in the restaurant business tells me that, after food quality, success is all about location. The third-person voice is objective writing that is designed "to present information or communicate ideas without obvious bias or emotion" (McWhorter, 2012, p. 280). The author's personal perspective is removed, and therefore points and ideas made in the writing need to be more carefully defined and supported with evidence or proof. For example, new restaurants frequently underestimate the importance of location to the success of their business. According to one restaurant

owner, "having the right location can either make or break your restaurant" (10 restaurant mistakes, 2008, para. 4) while another says, "no restaurant succeeds without...a great location" (Haden, 2012, para. 8). In a nutshell, the writing I will be doing at the university and in my professional life will be less about myself and more about ideas. Being specific when writing about people, is another way you can avoid biased communication in your professional and academic life. When writing about age, exact ages or age ranges (e.g., 15–18 years old, 65–80 years old) are more specific than broad categories (e.g., under 18 years old, over 65 years old). Also include the age mean and median in addition to the range of ages to increase the specificity of the reporting. The same goes for people’s cultures and people’s ethnicities. Humor is a valuable and effective tool for communicating just about anything because humor breaks down barriers. Humor has been shown to be an essential component of learning for young and old alike! It the one language that is understood by everyone. Humor allows us to approach threatening subjects in a non-threatening way. When listening to Robert love’s video, he talks about how humor connects us. When you share a laugh with someone, they not only enjoy themselves, but they are more receptive to your communication and the ideas you have.

Humor can be good in certain situation but in some, humor should not be used in your communication. Do not use humor to single someone out, use it to help them acclimate. Humor can be dangerous, use with caution. When presenting a project to a group of people who you do not know, it is best not to open your speech with a joke.

I do not really know anyone who likes sitting through business presentations. Most of them

are similar and many are boring. Everyone (I included) likes a good

conversation. By far the most disrespectful thing you can do to your audience is to insult their intelligence by reading your slides to them. The moment you do so you are telling them that they cannot read. If you insist on ignoring this advice then be aware that despite what we have been led to believe, your audience cannot read and listen to you at the same time; not effectively anyway. Biased and/or Insensitive Sentences: A secretary should always be available for her supervisor. (Biased). A secretary should be available for the supervisor. Autistic children in this program have maintained high GPAs. (Biased). Children with Autism in this program have maintained high GPA’s. As a nation, we strive for Christian values. (biased) Christian values is what we strive for as a nation. We need feedback on our new smartphone app, so I’ve sent a

survey to our employees who are under 50 (Biased) We need feedback on our new smartphone app, so we have sent out a survey to our employees who are in 40-50 age range. The new Chinese intern Chao is, of course, our best at analyzing data. (Insensitive). Our data analyst, Chao, is our bet intern.
