Music Psychology Assignment – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) How should I present my assignment? Academic essays should include the following formatting considerations: • • • • • •

A Title page with your name, student number, word count, and the title of your essay 12 point clear font (such as Times New Roman, Calibri, Cambria, Arial) 1.5 spacing between lines Generous margins Please use Microsoft Word (or equivalent) and you can save to pdf if you wish You can use first person if you wish, as this is a reflective essay style

How do I put my HUMS into my assignment? Include a photo or scan of your HUMS as an appendix at the end of your assignment document. Appendices are not included in your word count. You can google how to insert a picture or pdf into a Word document if you need IT help. Should I use subheadings to structure my essay? As this assignment is in four parts, you are welcome to use subheadings to show how you have addressed each section. Your essay should however still have a sense of coherence and integration overall. The marking rubric has more detailed information about what the markers will be looking for when grading. The assignment should be an essay style, with the 4 parts forming sections of the larger essay. Follow the structure described in the assignment information, no need for an additional introduction or conclusion. What is the word limit? For Undergraduate students, this is a 2000 word essay. For Masters students, this is a 3000 word essay. We allow 10% on either side of the word limit. On the assignment instructions page, there are guidelines for how to allocate words to each section. In-text citations are counted in the word limit, but the reference list at the end of your assignment and any footnotes are not included. Please note that Turnitin is a computer program, so it will count every word and not distinguish between what is your response to the question and what is everything else (bibliography, etc.), which is why we ask you to include your word count on your title page. What counts as a reference? An academic reference is considered to be a journal article, book or book chapter. You can use other sources for this assignment such as Websites, Blogs, unpublished reports or the lecture itself, but they will not be counted within the recommended number of references. You can of course use more than the recommended number of references in your assignment. If you wish to include literature that has been reviewed by another author in their article/book chapter, this is considered a secondary source and should be used sparingly. We recommend finding the original article yourself, reading it, and providing a summary. Secondary sources should be referenced appropriately, for example in APA6: Thompson 2012 (as cited in McFerran, 2013).

You can either exclusively use the literature presented by the lecturer in your topic, and you are also very welcome to search for other literature and include that in your assignment. Try to choose the most current pieces of literature for your essay, which typically means literature from the last 5 years. However, this is not always possible or relevant to your topic, so you can use your discretion. What referencing style should I use? You can choose any style of referencing you wish (APA6, Harvard, Vancouver, etc), but you must be consistent. If you have never used a reference style before and do not have a preference, then we recommend APA6 as that’s the psychology standard form. You can find lots of helpful referencing resources on the library webpage http://library.unimelb.edu.au/recite Where can I get help with my writing? If you need help with your academic writing, the Academic Skills Unit offer specific assignment help with drop in sessions and tutor sessions. Here is the website: http://services.unimelb.edu.au/academicskills Why don’t we need a cover sheet for this assignment? What is a cover sheet? A cover sheet is a plagiarism declaration. Turnitin will ask you to check a box saying that the assignment is your own work, so that's why you don't need an additional cover sheet. My assignment won’t load on the Turnitin link. What should I do? If you haven't had problems submitting to Turnitin before, it probably means the system if overloaded. Sometimes it can take many minutes for the assignment to load, and you should take care not to quit out of the submit process too early. If you are still experiencing problems, try a different internet browser (Firefox, Chrome, Safari etc) or try loading from a computer in the University Libraries. I just submitted my assignment, and Turnitin says I have a high similarity percentage. Will this effect my grade? Turnitin provides us with a "similarity report" or sometimes called an "originality report". It is not an accusation of plagiarism, however in all academic assignments you must reference any literature you use appropriately. For example, if you used a direct quote, it should be in quotation marks and a page number provided. The markers are trained in how to read the similarity reports, and they will check that you have referenced appropriately. If you have, there is nothing to be concerned about. Please note that your reference list could also be included in the similarity percentage, but clearly that is nothing to worry about. You can actually resubmit your assignment up until the due date/time if you wish. Do we need to submit a paper copy of the assignment? No, please only submit your assignment to the LMS Turnitin Links, and do not email your assignment to the subject coordinator. How do I apply for an extension?

Instructions for applying for an extension are provided on the Music Psychology LMS site. Applications should be made 3 days before the due date, and are typically provided on grounds for special consideration, such as illness, and documentation will need to be provided....
