Description

Alright y’all. Didn’t realize my atomic bomb video was so controversial. For everyone who was commenting and reacting to my video saying I don’t do enough research or that I was incorrect about the US not warning Japan about the bombings, here I am to clear this up. EDIT: Despite my personal beliefs, ultimately the point of this document is ONLY to prove that the U.S. didn’t warn Hiroshima or Nagasaki beforehand, as that was what people were claiming I had gotten wrong. Nothing more, nothing less. First off, before I start this, let me say. No, the 68 civilian deaths from Pearl Harbor does NOT justify the possibly 300,000 death toll. Sure, Hiroshima housed the HQ of the Japanese Second Army, but ~10,000-20,000 of the ~120,000-200,000 deaths* were military. 150 of the (approx.) 80,000-100,000 deaths at Nagasaki were military. Also. Read “Racing the Enemy” by Tsuyoshi Hasegawa, Japan surrendered because the USSR declared war against them, not because of the bombs. *200,000 was the estimated death toll of Hiroshima by 1950 ALL OF THESE ARE ESTIMATES. It’s extremely hard to pinpoint how many died.

“It is not unlikely that the estimates of killed and wounded in Hiroshima (150,000) and Nagasaki (75,000) are over conservative.” http://www.aasc.ucla.edu/cab/200708230009.html The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes gives a pretty good description of why they chose Hiroshima; it had been mostly unaffected by the firebombing campaigns and it would give scientists pretty good data on how effective it would be because of that. The military base wasn’t really that much of a factor.

The 1946 United States Strategic Bombing Survey states they chose Hiroshima and Nagasaki as targets because they had a high population, aka they wanted to kill as many as they could. ‘Military’ targets is a BS argument. http://marshall.csu.edu.au/Marshalls/html/WWII/USSBS_Summary.html

#1 Potsdam Declaration. Guess what? We told them they’d face “prompt and utter destruction.” This does not count in the slightest as it gives no warning of what the atom bomb ACTUALLY is, nor could you EVER assume that they would interpret this as any different than the strategic bombing we had been dropping on them for the past six months. It’s also EXTREMELY important to note that the Japanese military were reluctant even to believe that the Hiroshima bomb was atomic. “Nishina Yoshio, the head of the Imperial Japanese Army's atomic bomb project, wrote in a letter to his colleague on 7 August 1945, after being informed about Presi- dent Harry S. Truman's broadcast announcing the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima: "If Truman's broadcast turns out to be true, then I think this is the time that all of us [working on the atomic bomb] should literally cut our stomachs... the Americans have achieved a great victory over us."” If they were in denial even after they were bombed, then it’s simply untrue to imply that they would have, in any capacity, known what the declaration meant. https://www.jstor.org/stable/23613228?mag=how-the-h-bomb-led-to-a-reckoning-in-japan&seq= 1 Note: I am more than aware that with new weapons it would be unwise strategically. That is not my point. This is a response to those who say it was a good enough warning to signal the mass destruction of the atom bomb, and that it’s their fault for not listening.

#2 The LeMay leaflets.

Here’s the most famous one. These leaflets were dropped on cities telling them to evacuate, usually used for firebombing. Neither Hiroshima, Nagasaki NOR the two other targets were named on the leaflet. Firebombing is also not an Atom Bomb. Many probably assumed bomb

shelters would be adequate for safety, which obviously wouldn’t work with the sheer destruction of the bomb. Don’t believe me? Look for the characters yourself, Hiroshima (広島) and Nagasaki (長崎).

#3 Leaflets were not dropped on Hiroshima. Henry Arnold orders for warning leaflets to be made on August 7, the day after Hiroshima for future atom bombed cities. Due to messiness and difficulty, the leaflets were not dropped on Nagasaki until August 10, the day after it was bombed. They were also supposed to print 6 million leaflets, but ran low and dropped less. The officer who helped make and drop the bombs, Lt. Col. J.F. Moynahan himself wrote that the leaflets got delivered to Nagasaki after the bomb dropped. Also, the fact they thought even if they got the leaflets printed and dropped by the 7th that 2 days would be enough to evacuate an entire city is just laughable. Leaflets weren’t even there to help civilians evacuate, it was psychological warfare. Here’s draft one from August 7: TO THE JAPANESE PEOPLE: America asks that you take immediate heed of what we say on this leaflet. We are in possession of the most destructive explosive ever devised by man. A single one of our newly developed atomic bombs is actually the equivalent in explosive power to what 2000 of our giant B-29s can carry on a single mission. This awful fact is one for you to ponder and we solemnly assure you it is grimly accurate. We have just begun to use this weapon against your homeland. If you still have any doubt, make inquiry as to what happened to Hiroshima when just one atomic bomb fell on that city. Before using this bomb to destroy every resource of the military by which they are prolonging this useless war, we ask that you now petition the Emperor to end the war. Our president has outlined for you the thirteen consequences of an honorable surrender. We urge that you accept these consequences and begin the work of building a new, better and peace-loving Japan. You should take steps now to cease military resistance. Otherwise, we shall resolutely employ this bomb and all our other superior weapons to promptly and forcefully end the war. EVACUATE YOUR CITIES. The USSR then declared war on Japan on August 8. Here’s the second draft to include that: ATTENTION JAPANESE PEOPLE. EVACUATE YOUR CITIES. Because your military leaders have rejected the thirteen part surrender declaration, two momentous events have occurred in the last few days. The Soviet Union, because of this rejection on the part of the military has notified your Ambassador Sato that it has declared war on your nation. Thus, all powerful countries of the world are now at war with you. Also, because of your leaders' refusal to accept the surrender declaration that would enable Japan to honorably end this useless war, we have employed our atomic bomb. A single one of our newly developed atomic bombs is actually the equivalent in explosive power to what 2000 of our giant B-29s could have carried on a single mission. Radio Tokyo has told you that with the first use of this weapon of total destruction, Hiroshima was virtually destroyed. Before we use this bomb again and again to destroy every resource of the military by which they are prolonging this useless war, petition the emperor now

to end the war. Our president has outlined for you the thirteen consequences of an honorable surrender. We urge that you accept these consequences and begin the work of building a new, better, and peace-loving Japan. Act at once or we shall resolutely employ this bomb and all our other superior weapons to promptly and forcefully end the war. EVACUATE YOUR CITIES. I don’t think Moynahan was all too distraught though that they didn’t drop em in time since he writes:

http://blog.nuclearsecrecy.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/1946-History-Psychological-Warfar e-Manhattan-Project.pdf https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/truman-leaflets/ It also mentions the Hiroshima bombing, pretty obvious Hiroshima wasn’t warned. I’d also like to note that on August 9, the Bockscar flew over Kokura, the actual target but their vision was obscured due to clouds and smoke, so they switched to their backup, Nagasaki. Either way, there would have been no chance to warn Nagasaki as it was a last minute decision and they DIDNT EVEN HAVE THE LEAFLETS OVER THERE YET. Once again, an entire city can’t evacuate in a few hours. Once again, just psychological warfare.

Here’s the Bradbury museum in Los Alamos. If you’ll notice, it says AFTER the bombing of Hiroshima. Also notice it conveniently only mentions when the leaflets are written, not when they’re dropped. The first one is dated by the library to August 6th, 1945. The fact that it references the past destruction of Hiroshima makes it, of course, pretty clear that it wasn’t dropped on Hiroshima ahead of time, and throws the dating into question — even if it was drawn up on August 6th, it’s too late to be used on Hiroshima. A second one, also labeled as August 6, 1945, references the Soviet invasion of Manchuria… which took place on August 9th. So, just a priori, we can’t really give the library’s own dating labels any credence — they’re clearly wrong about the dates, and the dates matter in this case, since we are talking about whether the warnings happened before the bombs were actually used. And that’s not even getting into the whole “the atomic bomb was a secret” bit. http://blog.nuclearsecrecy.com/2013/04/26/a-day-too-late/ As multiple sources I’ve found reference this blog post, I’ll go ahead and say it’s credible. Also the fact that the links no longer exist probably says something about how ‘correct’ it supposedly was. https://www.damninteresting.com/retired/ww2-america-warned-hiroshima-and-nagasaki-citizens/ Read the correction. https://www.atomicheritage.org/history/hiroshima-and-nagasaki-bombing-timeline Note they only mention leaflets beginning on August 7, “A crash effort begins to print millions of leaflets to be dropped on major Japanese cities warning of future atomic attacks.” also note “Leaflet dropping and warnings to Japan by Radio Saipan begin. Nagasaki does not receive warning leaflets until August 10.” If anyone believes that I’m wrong and would like to correct me, please give evidence and show sources. All evidence I've been shown proving me ‘wrong’ so far has already been debunked, either by evidence in here I’ve linked or by other means....
