Kapit sa Patalim By Atom Araullo REACTION PAPER

It is a reality that being an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) is perceived by Filipinos as a solution to escape poverty. The “hard work and sacrifices leads to success” in every OFW story inspires more Filipinos to become one. Their stories do not only revolve in a fact that they have to work for a definitely foreign country. It is actually more than that. Despite of the violence, maltreatments, injustice and even death cases of OFWs, the aspirers are not feared and are not discouraged to pursue their plans and goals. The reality that this country provides no better opportunity to offer for the poor leaves them no choice but to leave their homes and to work for foreign homes. In order to be an OFW, there is a lot of preparation that must be done. They have to be careful and make sure of every step they take in the process as becoming an OFW is huge investment in terms of money. In line of the arranging of papers and outflow of money that was loaned or saved for a very long time, it is admiring to see that they also invest time and efforts to learn and attend seminars and trainings about different languages, the skills they needed to acquire, their rights as an OFW and the laws, rules and cultures of a foreign country. The fact that OFWs also invests time and efforts even before going to another country and work is often not known or neglected by most of the Filipinos in the stories of an OFW. It takes a lot of discipline and persistence during this stage and not all can pass this process as some are discouraged. To be able to accomplish the preparations is already an achievement. The preparation process may be inferred as the measurement of their willingness and perseverance in becoming an OFW. Few stories were told in the documentary. All they have in common is that they have a reason and inspiration why they are willing to take risks and sacrifice. With their courage as the only thing that they have in their pockets upon going and working for a place that is thousands of miles away from their families, really makes them heroes of today. They really deserve respect as they are willing to do this extent just to provide food in the tables and provide better future for their families. It is really a pride for us Filipinos as these OFWs proves that Filipinos are hardworking, selfless and globally capable and flexible. It is very saddening that even though their intentions are pure and good, there are still a lot of OFW cases that experiences maltreatments, violence and murders not only in the Middle East but all over the world. We, Filipinos, know and appreciate them

but it seems that it is not the case for the countries they work for. According to the stories told in the documentary, they are treated as if they things that are owned and can be sold. Rape and violence cases seem to be unending. In contradiction that these are known, the number of applications for OFW still increases day by day. Regarding the recent case of a death of an OFW in Kuwait, the Philippine government imposed a partial deployment ban in order to protect our OFWs and to make the government of Kuwait to form concrete plans in assessing OFW cases and to further put an end on the cases similar to what happened. It is hopeful to see that the government does not let OFWs suffer alone and still do actions that they believe is appropriate on the situation. The documentary is actually an eye-opening to the bittersweet battle of every OFW. It is a reminder that they must be appreciated and respected. OFWs are the tangible proof of the reality that this country is not sufficient enough to provide better lives for its people. Until today, its people are still praying that one day there will be no more Filipino that needs to be an OFW just to feed families and be able to have a better life....
