Weitzel 1 Natalia Weitzel 6 December 2020 GAH 2124-091 Professor DiPatri Paul Simon Reflection Paper Paul Simon’s song “America” seems to have several different meanings which are both literal and figurative, depending upon how one might interpret it. Throughout the song, Paul Simon talks about looking for America. While looking for America, I feel that Simon is figuratively looking for freedom and inequality, considering that is what America is genuinely supposed to be a model of. Furthermore, America is known to be a nation that is a perfect union, so this is what Paul Simon is searching for throughout his song, “America.” On the other hand, in a literal sense, the song is simply a story about Paul Simon and his girlfriend coming to America from England. Throughout the duration of the song, Simon seems to be dissatisfied with the nation; however, he is not exactly sure why. Something just does not seem quite right about this nation. Within Simon’s songs, we gain a satisfactory insight into the destiny of the American Dream because Simon does an effective job of outlining his ups and downs of the pursuit of happiness. For example, in his song “America,” Simon sings about his and his wife’s journey in America and how life in America may not be as mesmerizing as most people might think. In my opinion, I feel that this song shows an adequate representation of the American Dream and what America is really like. The American Dream “includes political democracy, economic opportunity, justice, and the pursuit of happiness,” and Paul Simon’s song “America” does an excellent job at portraying this in a unique way (Fuchsman, pp. 292, n.d.).
