PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Expected Pharmacological Action - Decrease manufacture of LDL and VLDL cholesterol - Lowers triglycerides in some clients - Increased manufacture of HDL - Promotion of vasodilation, decrease in plaque site inflammation, thromboembolism, and risk of atrial fibrillation

Therapeutic Use -

Primary hypercholesterolemia Prevention of coronary events Protection against MI and stroke Increase levels of HDL Prevention in clients who have normal LDL

Complications - Hepatotoxicity: Evidenced by increase in aspartate trasaminase - Myopathy: Evidenced by muscle aches, pain, and tenderness -

Medication Administration Oral - May be given at any time of day

Contraindications/Precautions - Hypersensitivity - Active liver disease - Lactation - Use of gemfubrozil or azole antifungals

Interactions - Fibrates and ezetimibe oncrease the risk of myopathy and liver and kidney injury - Medications that supresses CYP3A4, along with HIV protease inhibitors, amiodarone, and cyclosporine can increase levels of some statins when taken concurrently - Grapefuit juice supresess CYP3A4 and can increase levels of statins

Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Lowered levels of LDL and VLDL cholesterol and elevated HDL
