PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Expected Pharmacological Action Fioricet is intended as a treatment for tension headache. It consists of a fixed combination of butalbital, acetaminophen, and caffeine.

Therapeutic Use Fioricet is indicated for the relief of the symptom complex of tension (or muscle contraction) headache.

Complications Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction to Fioricet: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Medication Administration PO, onset 15-30 mins, peak is 1-2hrs and duration is 30 hrs.

Contraindications/Precautions Butalbital, acetaminophen, and caffeine tablets should be prescribed with caution in certain special-risk patients, such as the elderly or debilitated, and those with severe impairment of renal or hepatic function, or acute abdominal conditions.

Interactions Taking this medicine with other drugs that make you sleepy or slow your breathing can cause dangerous or life-threatening side effects. Ask your doctor before taking Fioricet with a sleeping pill, narcotic pain medicine, muscle relaxer.

Nursing Interventions Assess type, location, and intensity of pain before and 60 min following administration. Prolonged use may lead to physical and psychological dependence and tolerance.

Client Education Do not take Fioricet if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Alcohol and other CNS depressants may produce an additive CNS depression when taken with Fioricet, and should be avoided.
