The Iceman Tapes: Conversations with a Killer The following links play successive parts of an HBO documentary on Richard Kuklinski, a hired hit man for the Mafia. It shows a prison interview between psychiatrist Dr. Park Dietz and Kuklinski. For question #1 below, I’ve listed the diagnostic criteria for antisocial personality disorder. 1. Antisocial Personality Disorder diagnosis: A. There is a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others occurring since age 15 years, as indicated by three (or more) of the following:

a. Failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest He has killed more than 100 people

b. Deceitfulness, as indicated by repeated lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure Kuklinski killed his friend “Mr. Softee” and only used him for information.

c. Impulsivity or failure to plan ahead He has killed people on impulse, without caring about the consequences in that moment.

d. Irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults Kuklinski keeps repeating how annoyed or irritated he would get before killing someone

e. Reckless disregard for safety of self or others At one point, he shot someone in the head with a crossbow, just to see if it would work.

Consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations

g. Lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another He repeats that he feels no emotional, or “gut” response, whenever he sees a mutilated body.

B. The individual is at least age 18 years Kuklinski began people at a young age, up to adulthood. C. There is evidence of Conduct Disorder with onset before age 15 years Kuklinski would abuse small animals even at a young age D. The occurrence of antisocial behavior is not exclusively during the course of Schizophrenia or a Manic Episode. Kuklinski was never diagnosed with schizophrenia and never had manic episodes.

2. What does Dr. Dietz say seems to have caused Richard Kuklinski to become a killer? Genetic factor, he was born with a genetic predisposition to fearlessness. Behavioral factors also contribute to the formation of a killer, like how someone was raised, or if they were shown affection in childhood. Kuklinski has paranoid personality disorder, meaning he never trusted anyone, or forgave anyone who something wrong to him....
