Australia Day Questions 1.   

Describe the tone of the narrative voice (2 marks) Tell me the tone feelings/emotion Use textual reference Explain    The tone of the narrative voice varies throughout the short story to reflect the feelings and emotions  that are present at particular times. The tone is quite cynical in its nature, in how Jess and Stanley  engage in dialogue at the beginning of the story during the car ride as for example how Stanley comes upon a box of condoms in her dash. Additionally, we see how the tone changes to one that is  outspoken like how he says your dad “should get a job at Guantanamo bay” and she doesn’t react.  Overall the tone of the narrative voice adapts to the occurrences within the text.

Explain an aspect of culture (3 marks) Id a/an [correct] aspect Use textual evidence (at least 2) Explain – how well you unpack quotes to reflect point on culture This short story encapsulates an aspect of how it takes time to adapt to new cultures and a new  society. Stanley sees Australia in the mind frame of an outsider, thus we see how this text explores on  typically the aspect of stereotypical Australian culture. The line ‘Did you know that forty per cent of  people who fly Australian flags would still support the White Australia policy” spoken by Stanley  highlights how he is still sceptical about his position in Australian culture and society and if he will be accepted. The author uses stereotypical notions in the dialogue between the characters to reiterate how Stanley is an outsider and is adapting to the culture and customs.

How does composer use language features to achieve their purpose? (3 marks) Purpose of text  link to themes 1-2 Use textual evidence (at least 3) Explain – how well you unpack quotes to reflect point The composer uses language features in a very effective way in order to achieve her purpose of  highlighting the nature of the relationship between Stanley and Jess. The writer has used dialogue in a very sufficient way, where us as the responders can be opened to the character beliefs and  personalities that subtly provides a medium for us to connect with the characters on an emotional  level and places a further connection between the reader and Stanley and Jess. For example we get an  insight through “why were you crying before?” as we can explore their emotional side. Further the  writer has incorporated the feature of listing Stanley’s thoughts in the creative form of multiple choice answers, when asking himself, “When faced with an awkward situation while visiting parents of an  Australian friend, the most appropriated response would be:” Ultimately the composer has used a  number of language features in order to achieve her purpose of connecting the responder on a more  deeper level with the text

How does composer use characterisation to express their purpose? (5 marks) The composer has used characterisation in a very elaborate way that has allowed for the responder to connect with the character in an effective manner and form an emotional connection to the Stanley and Jess. At the beginning, we see how Stanley embarks on a journey where he first of all questions Australian practices and feels like he is an outsider to how he eventually and gradually atones to the customs....
