Avery-MacLeod-McCarty Experiment
1. Who conducted the experiment? The Avery- MacLeod- McCarty Experiment was conducted by Oswald Avery, Colin MacLeod, and Maclyn McCarthy. 2. When it was first conducted? It was reported in 1944. 3. What was the point of conducting the experiment? The point of this experiment was to show that DNA instead of proteins was the hereditary material of bacteria and could be analogous to genes or viruses in higher organisms to which at this time it was thought to be proteins. 4. What conclusion was determined from conducting the experiment? That DNA transferred the genetic information to the nonvirulent bacteria. 5. Write the steps of the experiment For this experiment they used two sets of bacteria: one is smooth (virulent) and one is rough (nonvirulent)
They injected deadly encapsulated bacteria into a mouse to which the mouse dies at the end
Then they inject a non-encapsulated nonvirulent bacteria into the mouse to which the mouse lives
After they heat the virulent bacteria at a temperature that kills them and which then they inject these bacteria into the mouse to which it lives
Next they have the denatured fatal bacteria mix into the living non-encapsulated nonfatal bacteria. Thus, this mixture is then injected into the mouse to which it dies.
Finally they mix the non-encapsulated harmless bacteria with the DNA that was extracted from the heated lethal bacteria. These “harmless” bacteria are then injected to the mouse after being mixed which leads to the mouse dying.
