An Inside Look at Rising Media Company Axios New media startups don’t usually turn heads, but Axios, which launched publicly in 2017, has changed that. Axios reporter Alayna Treene revealed more about the past, present and future of “the next great media company” and explained why it has gained so much traction since its founding four years ago. Axios isn’t a news source that has broad name recognition now, but it soon might. Treene explained how her company differs from other news sources. “We can’t just replicate what [the other sources are] doing. We have to do it differently,” she said. On account of the dynamic approach to media and strong founders, Treene thinks that Axios has the power to become a mainstream news source and eventually rival media companies such as the New York Times. The business structure of Axios is unconventional. The company was started in 2016 by two of the founders of Politico, who focused heavily on the business approach. Treene estimated that only a third of the 200 Axios employees are editorial staff, and that the majority of those 200 employees are on technology and business teams. Treene insists that although this may seem strange, “It’s always ways that you don’t think you can help journalism” that stimulate growth within new companies like Axios. Treene attributes the success of the company to its founders’ emphasis on business along with their focus of keeping up with and utilizing new technologies. The company is in the Beta stages of developing an app and plans to use platforms like email newsletters and podcasts that are more in sync with the fast-paced lifestyle that their readers are living....
