FACTS ABOUT BANA LINGAM The Narmada River bed near Omkareshwar and village Bakawan is where the Banalinga stones are found in an area of a 50 mile radius. Omkareshwar is where Adi Shankara met his guru Govinda Bhagavatpada on the banks of river Narmada. Bana Lingam made out these stones in River Narmada bed are very powerful Narmadeshwar Shivalingams. As per Skanda Puran these stones from Narmada have the power of Shiva. Narmada is the daughter of Lord Shiva. The Rewa Khand of Vayu Purana and the Rewa Khand of Skanda Purana are entirely devoted to the story of the birth and the importance of the Narmada River. Narmada Ke Kanker utte Shankar (which is a popular saying in the Hindi belt of India) which means that ‘pebbles and stones of Narmada are personified forms of Shiva’.

What is a Bana Lingam? Bana Lingam from the Narmada river bed is the Divine Sacred Symbol of Lord Shiva. It has within it the highest frequency of vibrations compared to any stone on Earth. The river Narmada is one of the Seven Holy Rivers of India.

Crystal Composition: It is considered that the unique composition of the Bana Lingams was formed 14 million years ago due to a large meteorite that crashed into the Narmada River near Omkareshwar The fusion of the Meteorite and the Earthly Minerals has spawned a new and unique type of Crystalline Rock with extraordinary energetic qualities – The Bana Lingam.

These Bana Lingams contain Crypto Crystalline Quartz and a Gemstone material called Chalcedony along with Basalt and Agate. The Narmada Bana Lingas are quite strong and the hardness is a 7 on the Moe’s Scale. This unique compositionis not found in any other crystals or stone.

The Oval Shape The Bana Lingam's oval shape (The shape of Universe as per NASA images) represents the unmanifest Paratpara Parameshwara manifesting HIMSELF as the cosmos with the interactive power of Goddess Shakti through the stages of 36 Tatvas (Vyaktha Avyaktha Nirupithancha paramam shattrimsha Tatvadikam -Vedas – Maha Nyasam - Urdva Ishana Mukham ). This process of Panchi Karanam is described by Adi Shankara in his Tatva Bodham

Yoga Sara: The famous Kashmiri Shiva Sashtra Text "Yoga Sara" of Kaula tradition, which is in the nature of a dialogue between Siva and Parvati, contains not only a dhyana for Siva in the form of a bana-linga but also a long stava (hymnology) eulogizing the bana-linga. Here Bana is the name of Siva Himself. The mere presence of a Banalinga is said to grace its environment with harmony, mental peace, prosperity and protection. Regular worship of the Lingam with the Panchakshari Mantra causes a powerful internal transformation in the individual releasing spiritual energy that has the capacity to negate the accumulated karmic burdens of its worshipper. The Bana Lingam in short helps one to transform lower self and realize SIVOHAM - our own true Divinity. Even merely thinking about a bana-linga early in the morning is likely to bestow success in all enterprises. (Yoga-sara, chapter 5) The word ‘bana’ also means an arrow, a reed-shaft, or the udder of a cow. In other words, the energy from Banalingam will pierce the heart of a true devotee and shatter the rock of ignorance and darkness and reveal the infinite Shiva Jyothi within and reward the devotee with the ambrosia of the white milk of purity and Gnana or enlightenment

The Hierarchy Among the lingas that are worshipped, there is a hierarchy, 15 being the Highest mentioned in Merutantra (6th prakasa). 1 Among the soft lingas: mud or clay 2 Among the hard ones: stone-lingas 3 Rock-crystal-lingas 4 The lingas carved in ruby, 5 Lingas made of saffron (kashmira) 6 Lingas made out of topaz, 7 blue sapphire, 8 Himalayan gem (Gomedakam) 9 coral, 10 pearl, 11 silver, 12 gold , 13 diamond , 14 mercury, and 15 Bana Lingam

Most easiest to worship with least restrictions Even though there are a lot of guidelines and restrictions in the worship of Shiva Lingams made of other materials such as mercury, Sphatika etc., in the case of Bana lingams no such restrictions are imposed.
