a summary of Ultrasound terms ...
BASIC ULTRASOUND TERMINOLOGY 1) ANECHOIC:
without internal echoes Usually fluid filled structures (cysts etc)
2) ECHOGENIC: a structure which produces strong echoes (echo rich) E.g. Renal sinus, fat shows up as echogenic 3) ECHOGENICITY: description of how echogenic a structure appears 4) ECHOLUCENT: without internal echoes 5) ECHOPENIC: a few internal echoes but less echogenic than other structures E.g. Renal cortex is echopenic (less echogenic) to the liver 6) HOMOGENOUS: of uniform echotexture 7) SOLID (HOMOGENOUS): uniform echoes due to acoustically similar tissues e.g. Liver, spleen 8) HETEROGENOUS: inhomogeneous, different echoes 9) ECHOTEXTURE: echo pattern 10) SONODENSE: structure that transmits sound poorly, e.g. something heavily calcified 11) SONOGENIC: like “photogenic” 12) SONOLUCENT: without internal echoes 13) THROUGH-TRANSMISSION: how well a structure allows sound to be transmitted through it. E.g. Anechoic structures have good through-transmission 14) COMPLEX MASS: mass that has both sonolucent and echogenic areas within it. I.e. has a wide range of densities within the tissues E.g. Abscesses, necrotic tumours...
