Description

Beards: Connotation and Denotation A beard has many different meanings to different people and cultures. A beard can be a way of experiencing someone else’s lifestyle, as a beard can become attractive through celebrity endorsement. A beard can become associated with a certain celebrity, and give them their individual image. By having the same style of beard, some men feel as if it gives them, or they will have, the power and success of that particular celebrity.

David Beckham (Bezants, J, 2015) Different types of facial hair can determine what type of lifestyle that person has. For example, a man seen with a moustache and pipe shows an image of wealth and power. Or contrastingly, a man seen with a long scruffy beard can be a sign of poor living and bad hygiene.

Beards can also give an image to musicians, for example ZZ Top, who are a rock band known for their long beards.

ZZ Top (Return of Kings, 2014) A particular image like their beards, help them to be recognized and help them become remembered. The long hair is also an image of Rock music.

In some cultures, having a beard is the transition into becoming a man, therefore, it has become important for a young boy to show off his manliness to others. Beards are advertised to give a better lifestyle and attract a potential partner, as a beard is a sign of maturity. Beards can also change our mind set as, “ wearing a beard will significantly change your personal

interactions with other men and women, as well as with the general public around you.” (Return of Kings, 2014) And also “it creates a strong alpha mentality” (Return of Kings, 2014). It could therefore be said that a beard helps men to think that they are more successful and dominant when they have a beard. However, people with importance, such as presidents, some MP’s and today’s monarchy do not have beards. Which states that it looks more professional to be clean shaven.
