Belbin’s Team Roles https://youtu.be/7LunroajlLE Dr Meredith Belbin studied team-work for many years, and he famously observed that people in teams tend to assume different "team roles." He defined a team role as "a tendency to behave, contribute and interrelate with others in a particular way" and named nine such team roles that underlie team success. Belbin identified 9 team roles and he categorised those roles into three groups Each team role is associated with typical behavioural and interpersonal strengths It can be used to think about team balance before a project starts You can use it to highlight and so manage interpersonal differences within an existing team It can be used to develop oneself of others as a team player

Shaper Implementer Completer Finisher

Challenges the team to improve. Puts ideas into action. Ensures thorough, timely completion.

Action Oriented Roles: challenge the team to improve performance, put ideas into action and meet deadlines Shaper – extrovert and questions assumptions but can offend Implementers – bring self-discipline to the team, get things done but be resistant to change Complete Finisher Pay attention to small detail, get things done right but worry too much People Oriented Roles

Coordinator Team Worker Resource Investigator

Acts as a chairperson. Encourages cooperation. Explores outside opportunities.

People Oriented Roles: draw together people and their ideas Coordinator – guide, listen, delegate and bring calm and order – might be manipulative Team Worker – support co-workers and negotiate diplomatically but get stuck in decisions Resource Investigator – use optimism and curiosity to develop outside contacts, but lose enthusiasm quickly Thought Oriented Roles

Plant Monitor-Evaluator Specialist

Presents new ideas and approaches. Analyses the options. Provides specialized skills.

Thought Oriented Roles: Analyse options or provide technical expertise Plant – Introverted, lone workers who come up with the most innovative ideas and solutions, which might and break all the rules Monitor-evaluator - Coldly and critically assesses team options which can make them appeared detached Specialist – know their subject and maintain professional standards, which might mean they lose sight of the bigger picture...
