Patricia Benner’s Novice to Expert Theory Patricia Benner's fledgling to master hypothesis clarifies that medical caretakers' abilities create over the long haul with experience, and a comprehension of really focusing on patients will likewise create throughout this time toward a path structure novice or beginner to a specialist. Through Benner's tasks she noticed clinical circumstances which her five degrees of nursing arose. Benner's hypothesis is distinguished by those five levels starting with fledgling, advance amateur, capable, capable, and lastly master. A level change shows headway in abilities. Each level change expands on a past level just as clinical experience. Benner’s theory is based on evidence drawn from observations, interviews from other nurses, and personal experience (Mckenna, Pajnkihar, & Murphy, 2014). Benner adapted her theory from the work of Hubert and Stuart Dreyfus, the Dreyfus Novice to Expert Model of Skill Acquisition. Patricia Benner’s worldview has helped to direct nursing to value the whole person which includes their psychosocial and spiritual needs. Patricia Benner calls to all nurses to be compassionate to strangers. Society expects nurses to be competent in the care that they deliver, and society expects nurses to be experts in their field (Gardner, 2012).

Strengths and Weaknesses Benner’s theory emphasizes professional development. The strengths of the theory focuses on the nurse at any level of professional development and where that nurse is professionally in their nursing practice or nursing carrier. Benner’s theory also highlights the importance of developing expertise. A weakness in Benner’s theory is the assigning the nurse a stage based on the number of years may not always be a reliable source (Mckenna, Pajnkihar, & Murphy, 2014). Application Strategies for Clinical Practice Applications of Patricia Benner’s theory for clinical practice a nurse can understand how to move through the levels as the nurse gains knowledge, skills, and experience while developing each level from novice to expert. Benner believed that all nurses could progress if they are given enough time and focusing on the stages of novice to expert. Benner’s theory can continue to be used to improve nursing skills and the care of all patients in any environment (Benner, 1982). Case Example An example of Patricia Benner’s theory of Novice to Expert that I can describe from my personal experience and apply to my practice would have to be when I was in nursing school. As a first year first semester nursing student in an associate’s program I started as a novice in my profession. I was a beginner. I was told what to do and how to do it. I had an experienced nurse as well as a clinical instructor helping every step of the way to make sure that I was performing the task or procedure on the patient correctly. By graduation I was an advanced beginner. I was able to administer medications on my own as well as perform tasks that my primary nurse felt comfortable with me performing because at the end of the day my primary nurse was still held responsible for the total care of the patient. I say that I was an advance beginner because of this and because I had experience in the actual nursing situations where I could begin to recognize

principles that would guide my treatment options and decisions as well as patient centered goals with the planning of care (Benner, 1982). Conclusion The paragraphs above analyzed Patricia Benner’s novice to expert theory. The investigation incorporated a depiction of the hypothesis' experience and impacting factors, including perspective.
