Hearing Benny Hochman’s story was very eye opening and his delivery made it easy to feel the emotion. There were many specific parts of his story that managed to grab my attention. Many of these things I’ve never heard about, although I’ve only heard one other Holocaust survivor’s story. A few moments that grabbed my attention include the baby being tossed in the air and shot, butchered human skin being made into art, and someone suffocating in the box car on the way to Auschwitz. The beginning of his story made me feel at ease even though I knew everything would not stay how they were. The family owned a nice little bakery and the parents made enough for all the siblings to go to school. When Benny said the Nazis knocked on the door at two in the morning, I was very intrigued and could feel the tension. Benny begins describing the Nazi soldier that was given the Bakery and I could feel Benny’s disapproval and the families anger at this moment. I, too, felt angry at this moment and wanted to do anything to help Benny and his family out because that Bakery seemed to be their motivation and source of life. In the meat of the story, the true character and evilness of the Nazis are made evident by Benny. The example of the man suffocating in the box car on the way to Auschwitz was shocking. I had heard of overcrowding in the box cars before, but I was not aware that people suffocated to death in them. I believed they mainly starved or overheated, but I thought wrong. The only time I had heard of someone suffocating to death in a box car is in the movie “Schindler’s List”. The movie showed a lot of heartless shootings and gas showers, such as Benny described. Another shocking thing that Benny mentioned was how the Nazis kicked

pregnant women in the stomach, or they would rip a baby from their mothers arms and toss it high in the air over a pit and another soldier may shoot it, or it’ll fall to its death. The end of the story really showed Benny’s true character. It emphasized his outspoken personality and his passionate gratefulness for his freedom. Benny went to the University of Colorado at Boulder and “raised hell” and defended America with his whole heart because people were talking bad about the people who saved his life and many of his acquaintances. Benny began to tear up when he started talking about his experience of defending America and it was a very heartwarming and authentic moment. Benny was radiating with everlasting thankfulness and joy and he won over the audience with his character. You couldn’t do anything except appreciate Benny and his existence in that moment. Overall, Benny’s story contained many roller coaster moments and you can only like Benny Hochman after listening to him. Every moment that he shared meant a lot to him and made an impact on his life. He comes off as a welcoming guy and has a see-through personality. It is unfortunate that all these things happened to Benny, but it is a blessing that he survived all these moments and you can feel his gratefulness for that. Benny’s story may make you sad and angry at the nonsense that the Nazis were doing to these innocent people, but it does raise awareness so that an incident such as the Holocaust can be avoided at all costs....
