Instructions: For this assignment, you will be studying a story from the Gospels. More specifically, you will be studying Jesus encounter with Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42. You will use the template below in order to complete a study of this passage. In your study, you will use the skills of Observation, Interpretation, Correlation, and Application that you have become familiar with through your reading in Everyday Bible Study.

I. Observation A. I have read Luke 10:38-42 in both a formal translation (KJV, NKJV, NASB, ESV, or CSB) and a functional translation (NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. You will find a copy of the NASB, ESV, CSB, and NLT in your myWSB Library. o Yes o No B. Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying 1. Main characters: (List them) God, our Father Jesus Christ, the son of God Disciples including Luke Mary and Martha(sisters of Lazarus)

2. Plot: (50-100 words) Martha and Mary have an encounter with Jesus. Jesus visit’s Martha’s home on his way to Jerusalem. Mary sits at Jesus’ feet as Martha completes tasks around the house, possibly dinner. Martha asks Jesus why she is working around the house while her sister just sits at his feet. Jesus then tells Martha that Mary has made the right decision and that Mary sees what is important.

3. Story structure: (50-100 words) Introduction: Jesus and his disciples come to a village on their way to Jerusalem. Inciting Incident: They find Martha’s home. They welcome her in.

Rising: Martha cooks a large meal for all the people while her sister Mary sits at Jesus’s feet listening Jesus’s teaching. Climax: Martha asks Jesus why Mary is not helping her serve him and is just sitting there. Falling: Jesus tells Martha that Mary has discovered what is truly important and that Martha needs to stop fretting the small things. C. List basic observations about this passage using the “Key Question” for observation. Remember to consult the list of items from the observation section in studying the Gospels in Chapter 36. This will help you be more detailed in your answers to “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” and “how.” 1. Who: Jesus, Mary, Martha and the many disciples are the people in the story. 2. What: What is taking place is Jesus guiding Martha to listen to the word of God. 3. Where: The story took place in Martha’s home in a village near Jericho, east of Jerusalem. 4. When: The story took place before the death and resurrection of Lazarus. Jesus visited Martha and Mary(the sister's of Lazarus) 5. Why: Jesus went to visit with Martha and her sister Mary, as Martha is preparing things to welcome Jesus into their home. Martha got up and left to finish the preparation for Jesus' visit. Now, Mary continues to sit at Jesus' feet, listening as he was speaking and teaching the word of God. Martha was not very happy carrying all the burned of work by herself. So, she went to Jesus complaining about Mary still sitting at his feet. As a result of Mary not helping with the preparing, Martha became upset and distracted with all the needed preparations and want Jesus to help to get Mary up and involved in their task. 6. How: Jesus saw in Martha spirit and face how troubled she was about completing her preparations. He also saw how much Mary loved receiving him and the word of God. II. Interpretation A. Determine the author’s main point. In 1-2 paragraphs (100-400 words) explain what you think the author is trying to communicate in this passage. Remember to take into consideration that this passage includes a conversation that Jesus has with Martha. Thus, this passage is both showing and telling us something. There are several things the author points out in the passage about Martha. For one it was Martha being so caught up and burden with her plans for Jesus' visit. At one point, she does not realize that the purpose of his visit is to spend time with her and Mary. What we do is place our attention

on everything around us except for the Lord himself. Jesus is the center of our lives and yet we're so busy with our daily lives,. When that occurs, we forget about having and building a relationship with him. Building and having a relationship with Jesus is more important than worrying about life's burdens.

B. Based on your answer above, write out one principle from this passage. You should be able to express this principle in 1-3 sentences. What is a principle? A principle is a fundamental truth or proposition of believe. The proposition of believe is that Martha wasn't jealous about Mary spending time with Jesus. that I have without action is dead. When you don't have faith in God, the situation that you are in will seem more unrealistic to get through. You have to be able to go through some action in order to test the faith.

III. Correlation A. How does this passage from Luke’s Gospel fit within the meta-narrative of the Bible? State what type of story you believe this to be (creation, fall, redemption, or new creation) and explain why you believe this to be so. Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (100-200 words) in length. This passage fits within the meta-narrative of the Bible that the ideas of storytelling can be recorded and shown throughout the years. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” This quote above gives a clear explanation that Martha wasn't feeling having to prepare the feast alone. In my opinion, this fell under the redemption part of the story. Martha's reaction to preparing the feast alone was that she questioned Jesus Christ and wanted him to make her sister help. Jesus Christ felt that wasn't necessary to force Mary to help.

B. How does your principle from Luke 10:38-42 fit with the rest of the Scripture? This principle is the one you have written out in 1-3 sentences in the Interpretation section. If your principle is a true Biblical principle it will be reflected throughout the

Scriptures. Where is the principle discovered in this New Testament narrative found elsewhere in the Scriptures? Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (100-200 words) in length.

C. How does this passage from Luke’s Gospel reflect the person and work of Jesus Christ? State and explain at least one way that the principle of this passage identifies something of the person and work of Jesus Christ. Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (100-200 words) in length. This passage reflects the person and work of Jesus Christ with the respect that what he says goes. Giving Martha advice and spending time with Mary was Jesus' way of letting these sister's know what place they were in. 41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[a] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” This quote shows that the principle identifies with the work of Jesus Christ. This explains how Jesus Christ plays a major part in Luke's Gospel.

IV. Application What points of application can be made using the Four Questions for Application? State and explain 1 point of application for each of these four questions. Your explanation for each of these points should be 1 paragraph (100-200 words) in length. A. The question of duty What is duty? The definition of duty is something that is required by one's religion, job, position or the laws. The main duty is to take Jesus' advice when given and understanding how to implement the information. The duty is also to seek the advice that God gave Martha and see how you can relate to it. I think that the duty would be for me to make sure that I put my trust in God and follow through with the messages he's placed in front of me. My sole duty would be to understand that Jesus gives advice to those who can handle it. B. The question of character What is character? Character is the distinctive moral qualities that an individual can possess. The person that I want to become is the one who will enhance their faith in the Lord and not always question his work. I will take time out to understand the work of Jesus and not have to question my faith or belief in the Lord. I want to be able to rely on God no matter what the situation is. Life who have character but it's all about your character standing out.

C. The question of goals When thinking of setting goals, you want to have a realistic plan of what to focus on and execute that plan. This will definitely help you. My main focus is to understand and study the messages that Jesus has in store for me. Just expanding on where God wants me to be. I want God to know that I am trying my best. He has set the ways for me and I just have to follow. A major goal of mine, is learning how to not be in control and possibly let others lead. Although, I don't consider myself a follower, I can respect someone else's guidance if it's leading me in the right direction. D. The question of discernment What is discernment? We believe that discernment is choosing between what's right and wrong or truth and a lie. The right thing in this passage was for Martha to listen to Jesus. The wrong thing was for Martha to question her duty while Jesus visited. The truth is that Martha was upset that Mary didn't help her prep for the big feast. The lie is that Jesus wanted both of the sisters to obey to his response....
