It’s The Right Choice In My Eyes Vittorio De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves is a film that demonstrates different people’s struggles. Many people that face their hardships in this movie try to find hope or fix their problems in any way they can, even if it’s the wrong way. The overall meaning of this movie is that even though we are all different, our struggles are what brings us closer and make us more similar. Out of all the scenes in this film, there were two that demonstrate the overall meaning of this film. One scene that contributes to the overall meaning of the film is the first scene with La Santana, the fortune teller. In this scene, you see a long line of people waiting to get a reading from her. Since the majority of the town always looks dead and depressed they are trying to find hope that their personal issues will get better. Many of the people waiting in line look very sad or are sobbing. This relates to the overall meaning of the film because it shows you how not just one person, but many people seek hope and don’t care about the price that needs to be paid to find it. This scene also shows you how most civilians feel depressed due to a number of people that are in the room waiting to get a reading. Just watching the scene made

Castro 2 me feel depressed for them because it’s very sad to see that the people are very desperate to hear good news and that their last option is to go pay La Santa for a good reading when she might not even give them positive feedback. Even though the townspeople are wasting their money this also shows that they are dealing with their problems in a positive way by talking to La Santana about what is bothering them rather than dealing with their problems negatively. Another scene that contributes to the whole meaning of the film is when La Santana’s helpers are contributing to the business more than she is. In this scene, you notice that her helpers are taking more control and are deciding who is next in line to get a reading and who isn’t while La Santana is just sitting there. Most of the townspeople look poor and are trying to find work. I believe that La Santana is producing her business in a wrong way by giving the people false hope in her readings. Just by looking at her workers contribute more than her shows how she doesn’t really care about the people, which leads to me think that she is lying to the townspeople. Even though her helpers take more charge than she does, they don’t care about the people as well because we also witness that they allow Bruno and Ricci cut in front of everyone in line even though the others had been waiting there a longer. I feel like the reason La Santana is producing a bad business is that she has also dealt with terrible hardships just like everyone else in the town. I believe that from her hardships, she got a wake-up call and realized that she had to keep moving forward and try to look on the bright side of things. I also believe that she realized she was going to have to make a living somehow, even if it meant she has to make a living the wrong way. This relates to the overall meaning of the film because it shows you how La Santana is not as different than everyone else since she experienced hardships as well.

Castro 3 In conclusion, the overall meaning of the film Bicycle Thieves  is that even though we are all different, our struggles are what brings us closer and make us more similar. There are many scenes in this film that can express the overall meaning of the movie yet only two of them caught my attention the most. The different scenes with La Santana express positive things about the townspeople and negative things about her. We see that the townspeople are dealing with their issues in a positive way by talking to La Santana about them even though she doesn't care. We also see that La Santana and her helpers are simply just listening to people’s issues to earn their money. It disappoints me to see La Santana had to be that way with her customers. It also makes me sad that her customers are oblivious to notice that the readings are fake. Everyone in this movie is just trying to continue with life even though it is difficult and it makes me even more disappointed to know that others are just trying to bring them down more just like La Santana....
