Description

BIO1022 Week 5: Animal Solutions to Life: Feed the Animal Note: This document outlines the major concepts for the week and is intended as a basis for structuring your study. The questions listed following this page are only intended to guide your understanding of the week’s content and not as example/practice questions. Answers will not be provided. Week 5 Learning Outcomes 1. Discuss how different organisms in very different environments have very similar nutritional needs. ○ Identify the three main needs of any organism 2. Relate the nutritional composition of foods to biomass and structure. ○ Discuss how organisms manage the cost of imbalanced diets ○ Identify the key components involved in the feedback of satiation 3. Describe each of the major mechanical and chemical digestive processes. ○ Describe the purpose of each of the digestive organs ○ Identity the major enzymes and the classes they break down 4. Distinguish the major adaptations for nutrient acquisition in the carnivores, omnivores and herbivores. ○ Explain the specifics of each diet and why the associated adaptations have arisen ○ Discuss how within specific diets there can still be variation in the feeding methods 5. Describe how wastes are excreted from the organism ○ Detail the specific structures for eliminating nitrogenous wastes

Suggested Skeleton Notes: Note: The following will help indicate the specific concepts, key terms and useful diagrams to construct for this week’s learning outcomes. You can use the weekly material, including the workshop, to make your notes on the following topics. LO1. Understand that very different organisms in very different environments have very similar nutritional needs. What are the three main requirements that organisms need to fulfill from food? What are two things that nutrition provides to fulfill these requirements

LO 2. Relate the nutritional composition of foods to biomass and structure. How might an animal mitigate an unbalanced diet? What behaviours and structural adaptations are present? How does the body sense when we are “full” and when we require more food? What are the main hormones involved? LO 3. Describe each of the major mechanical and chemical digestive processes. On the diagram below, label the areas responsible for; -

Mechanical digestion Chemical digestion Absorption

How does this process occur at each location?

What is the main function of the following organs? What nutrients do they absorb (if

any) and what specialisations do they have? -

Stomach Intestines Pancreas Gall bladder

LO 4. Distinguish the major adaptations for nutrient acquisition in the carnivores, omnivores and herbivores. What are three different mechanisms by which aquatic animals are able to feed?

How does the digestive tract of a carnivore differ from a herbivore? What structural adaptations do herbivores have?

LO 5. Describe how wastes are excreted from the organism Draw and describe a basic system for excreting nitrogenous wastes
