Monarchs in Decline Every year, monarch butterflies migrate between their summer homes in the north and their winter homes in tropical regions, such as Mexico. The line graph shows the changing winter population of monarchs in Mexico. Data from other monarch homes confirm a similar trend.

1. Analyze Graphs What trend in the monarch population does the graph show? The population rapidly increases then rapidly decrease then stabilizes for a little while then decreases.

2. Evaluate Claims A student claims that the monarch population increases and decreases in a cycle, similar to the pattern of predator-prey populations like wolves and moose. Use the data to evaluate this claim. They are true because when the predator population is high the population of the monarchs, the prey would decrease, and when the population of the predators is low the population of the prey would increase.

3. Ask Questions What questions would you ask to identify the limiting factors that are affecting the monarch population? Around what times of the year does the population decline the most and what is the population of the predators around the time when the population is at its lowest.
