• Illness is NOT an excused absence. However, if you have long term medical issues and/or a serious •

illness during the semester it is in your best interests to inform me before it interferes with your academic performance. A HARD copy of the absence form (available on Bb in the “Start of Semester” folder) along with documentation must be turned in to me if you are requesting to make up any missed work.

• Extra Help: I am available to help you review material to help you succeed. Additionally, the Pirate Academic Success Center offers free tutoring for this course. Please visit their website: http://www.ecu.edu/csacad/aa/pirateacademicsuccesscenter/index.cfm. Late Work: Late work will be accepted at my discretion. Unless you have an excused absence, late work may not earn full credit. Attendance: Regular attendance is essential for success. East Carolina University’s policy for class attendance is stated in the Undergraduate Catalog. You are responsible for material covered during lecture and the assigned reading. Excused absences can be obtained through the ECU Dean of Students and make up work will be allowed. http://www.ecu.edu/cs-studentaffairs/dos/excused_absences.cfm All other absences and missed work will be handled at my discretion. Attendance will be taken periodically through index cards and activities; these will be UNANNOUNCED and WILL contribute to your grade. Please bring a 3x5 index card to EVERY class, answers written on anything other than an index card will NOT receive credit. In addition, you are REQUIRED to buy a subscription to Top Hat, a response system that will be used in class EVERYDAY. You will need to purchase and register this subscription by Thursday, August 31st. You can purchase Top Hat at the bookstore or online. What to do: Once you have your subscription number, use the link on the Bb to go to the login page. 1) Create an account. WARNING! USING ANY EMAIL OR ID BESIDES YOUR ECU ID MAY MEAN THAT YOU DO NOT GET CREDIT FOR ATTENDANCE. 2) Use the Join Code 964119 to be enrolled in this course. 3) Download the app onto your mobile device. 4) Login when you get to lecture everyday (online or using the app). Academic Integrity: Academic integrity is expected of every East Carolina University student. ECU’s honor code is published in the 2017-2018 Undergraduate Catalog. Any student who violates the Honor Code will receive an “F” for the course and be subject to additional penalties administered by the Dean of Undergraduate Studies. Procedures governing academic integrity violations are described in the Student Handbook/Clue Book. http://www.ecu.edu/cs-studentaffairs/dos/ecu-creed.cfm. Behavior: Be on time. Important announcements will be made at the start of every lecture regarding material covered, grades and dates. Don’t leave early or pack up before the end of lecture. Turn off mobile phones and personal stereos before lecture starts. DO NOT TALK ON THE PHONE DURING LECTURE – YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE. Texting, playing games or watching videos on any device IS a distraction to yourself and the people around you. I reserve the right to ask any student who is engaging in any activity that I find distracting/disruptive to leave lecture for that day. Be considerate and do not talk during class unless to ask a question. Socializing during class is rude and will not be tolerated. Repeated behavior that disrupts the learning process may lead to disciplinary action and/or removal from class.

Biology 1050, General Biology, East Carolina University, Fall 2017 COMPUTER POLICY: Laptops are allowed in lecture, but only to assist you with class material and using Top Hat. Using your computer for tasks other than note taking is disruptive to the students sitting near you. You may be asked to leave lecture. East Carolina seeks to comply with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). Students requesting accommodations based on a disability must be registered with the Department for Disability Support Services located in Slay 138 (252-737-1016, [email protected]), http://www.ecu.edu/cs-admin/accessibility/index.cfm. I work closely with this office. Accommodations on quizzes and exams will be provided once I have received your paperwork.
