They will learn to demonstrate and communicate this understanding in a variety of ways, such as: reasoning with definitions and theorems, connecting concepts, and connecting multiple representations, as appropriate. Students will demonstrate the ability to model lines and planes in space and calculate partial and directional derivatives of functions of multiple variables.

Canvas: I will use Canvas (https://foothillcollege.instructure.com/) to post notes, files, announcements etc. It will be the primary mode of communication with the whole class. Configure your Canvas account to receive any announcements and updates by email. If you have never used it before and/or are having difficulty, come and talk to me during the first week of classes. Required Material: A notebook dedicated to Math 1C, pencil, eraser, scientific calculator. Only scientific calculators are allowed on quizzes and tests. A binder to file the class notes (which will be posted on Canvas). You are required to bring a copy of the class notes to class which will be posted in advance. Calculator: You may use only a scientific calculator on tests/quizzes for arithmetic computations. Graphing calculators are not necessary. We will use Desmos in class. Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. Leaving the class before the end of the class period, coming late to class will count as absences. You are allowed three absences without excuse. If there are more than 3 absences (without a valid reason), I reserve the right to drop the student from the class. Regular attendance will help you keep up with the material Taking good notes. Reworking problems/proofs from class. Studying the textbook to understand the material. The text is written for students. Taking time to understand and use the symbolic language You will grasp more of the material in class if you read ahead. The quarter has 12 weeks. It goes by very quickly. It’s important that a consistent effort is made from the beginning. Working out all the assigned practice problems. At least 2 hours of study time at home every weekday and more on weekends. Getting help early (look below for some places you can get help from) Taking the weekly quizzes and homework seriously. This will again help you keep up. Avoid last minute preparation for tests/quizzes. Preparing ahead of time helps your brain retain more as does studying the material multiple times.

Sources of Help: I am always available for help. Set up an appointment if you can’t make it to my office hours. Tutorial help is available in the Teaching and Learning center (Room 3600) through the Pass the Torch study teams program, the STEM Success Center (Room 4213 which is regularly staffed with Foothill Faculty members and well qualified instructional associates who are there to help you. You can also request one-to-one tutoring services . I urge you all to use this wonderful facility. It’s a good idea to start visiting these centers early in the quarter to maximize their benefits. NetTutor is available on Canvas. This is an online help site. Class Conduct: Please arrive on time for the class and stay the whole period. Let us all be respectful of the students and the teacher so that we have a healthy learning environment. Cell Phones: Please place your cell phone on vibrate/silent mode during class hours. If you feel you urgently need to make or attend to a call, please step out for no more than a few minutes to talk on your cell phone. Academic Integrity: Cheating will not be tolerated. Cheating includes (but is not limited to) copying during a test/quiz/exam, looking at another student’s work while taking a test/quiz/exam, talking to another student during a quiz/test/exam. You will not be allowed to use your cell phone during the quiz/test/exam for any reason. Cheating in any form will result in disciplinary action and will be reported to the Dean of student affairs at Foothill College. This disciplinary action might include anything from receiving zero points on the test/exam/quiz/homework to an F in the class. Please consult the school’s policy on academic honesty.
