Introduction: Dissection is used for one to see, touch, and discover the different organs in an animal’s body. Seeing the organs and understanding how they work in an animal helps one understand how the system works in the animal including humans. In this lab a star fish is being dissected. A starfish is a star shaped Phylum Echinodermata that belongs to the class Asteroidea and falls underneath the animalia kingdom. Materials: 

Dissecting Tray

Dissecting Pins

Scissors

Forceps

Probe

Gloves

Lab Coat

Procedure: First, we identified the different surfaces of the starfish. Next, we identified the white little spikes located on the outside of the starfish known as spines. After identifying the spines, we than located a white bulb structure known as the madreporite. We also identified the starfish’s arms and underneath the arms are the tube feet, then we used the scissors to cut a medium piece of one of the arms and cut up and away until we got in the central circle and cut around the circle so the internal parts could be viewed. Once the cutting was done a pink like structure was recognized which is known as the pyloric stomach. Next, we removed the pyloric stomach to identify the ring canal, then we went lower down to where the

arm is located and identified a yellowish type of glands known as the digestive glands. Lastly, we identified a long trail going from the ring canal to all the arms known as the ampullae. After the parts of the starfish was identified it was disposed properly in a black or bag and then the area was cleaned, and one hands were washed. Results:

Discussion: Shown above is a starfish being dissected. We were able to see and label all parts of the starfish also known as the Phylum Echinodermata. We were able to see the ring canal, pyloric stomach, the oral surface and more. After seeing the different parts, it was easy to figure out each of their functions and what they do for the starfish.

Conclusion:

In this lab we used lab materials to dissect a starfish. With our observations it was discovered that starfishes are invertebrates and have an aboral and an oral view. Starfishes have five rays and do not have a specific anterior or posterior end. While dissecting the starfish we discovered the different organs and their functions that help the starfish survive such as the gonads, pyloric area and the stomach.
