Description

Connor Morris Sociology of Crime – Blaming the Victim To me, blaming the victim means exactly how it sounds. A crime is committed against a person, and that person is held responsible for the act that happened to them. An example of this could be if a girl is raped and is blamed for making herself a target by the way she dresses or the way she acts. I think the idea of blaming a victim is completely ludicrous and disgusting. There are so many things wrong with victim blaming. For starters, there are already so many negative effects for victims of rape including PTSD, depression, anxiety, loss of sleep, eating disorders – blaming someone for being forced to have sex would only add to these problems. Blaming someone for getting raped because of the way they dress is implying that they want to get raped. I’m almost 100% sure nobody wants to get raped and have any of the side effects that come with it. You could say that a rapist targeted a specific person because of the way they dress, but I’m sure a rapist is going to rape whoever they want regardless if they were wearing sexually attractive clothes or not. There was research that showed that rapists target people for looking submissive or weak, and women who wear more conservative clothing often have these traits. In that case, a woman who dressed more provocatively and showed more confidence would be less likely to become a victim because they might retaliate. In summary, I believe that victim blaming is ridiculous. People who blame victims are usually just sexist radicals that have twisted views. Girls should be able to wear, for the most part, whatever they want without having to be judged....
