Blue-Collar Brilliance In the article “Blue-Collar Brilliance” Mike Rose claims that the amount of knowledge and intelligence can’t be measured because of how much schooling and teaching someone has acquired. (243-254) Rose believes many jobs that don’t require much if any schooling could still require just as much intelligence on as most any other occupation. He mentions that most people would think that a blue collar job doesn’t need much knowledge. He gives notice to the fact that they don’t give much attention towards the mental intelligence needed for their job. (244-249) He supports his ideas by telling a story about his mother as a waitress. Rose continues to argue his belief by giving example of his Uncle Joe. With this story he backs up previous ideas of intelligence aren’t always correlated to formal education. (247-249) Rose questions why most people think lowly of those who just work or don’t go to college. He claims the way of thinking and the intelligence his mother and uncle have are worthy of a democratic society. (254) In conclusion the author believes that intelligence is what counts, not how many years of schooling you have on your back. Rose also seems to have the same views about education as previous authors including Liz Addison, David Foster Wallace, Andrew Hacker and Claudia Dreifus. (179-214) They all believe that you are better off having an education than not.
