Critical Reading Step 5 (Summary) – “Blue-Collar Brilliance”
In “Blue-Collar Brilliance,” Mike Rose refutes the idea that intelligence is not a requirement for a blue-collar job. He refers to it as “a place where competence is synonymous with physical work” (274). Rose repudiates the generalizations made regarding blue-collar workers and their image portrayed as one of “no brightness behind the eye, no image that links hand to brain” (276). These kinds of jobs require as much dexterity and intelligence as any other work by involving abilities like mathematical skills, multi-tasking, excellent memory, technical knowledge, hands-on experience and alertness of mind. By “separating the body from the mind”, Rose confers that we let biases occupy our minds about blue-collar tasks. It is essential to note that being responsive to changes in the environment, evaluating the surroundings and making the correct decisions, all require a certain level of intelligence, so Rose resolves that it is unfair to disregard the complexity of the blue-collar jobs....
