EXPANSION OF THE MUSLIM WORLD 1. What are some of the causes of cultural blending in the Safavid Empire? The cultural blending in the Safavid Empire was caused by: (1) Artistic influence- Art and literature flourished during Suleyman's rule where the works produced were influenced by the people all around the Persian Empire, Arab and China. (2) Migration- the Turks were wanted to gain territory for their empire and the location of the Ottoman Empire was on a major trade route. (3)Pursuit of religious freedom- Because Suleyman was required to follow the Islamic law, he granted the Ottomans a freedom of worship, including the Christians and Jews, thus, a cause of cultural blending (4) Trade and conquest- Ottomans was able to capture and dominate the whole Eastern Mediterranean. Suleyman also reigned from Istanbul to Central Europe, North Africa and Central Asians. Moreover, because of their location, they became a major trade route throughout the surrounding empires.

2. What was the value of treating conquered people in a way that did not oppress them? Treating conquered people without oppression will demoralize rebellion, motivate payment of taxes and free armies to focus on conquest. Conquered people will be their allies, instead of being slaves to their empire. An example of this practice is the tolerance of the Ottoman Empire to religious practices, peace and compromise and even improved the lives of the peasants. Religious groups are allowed to rule their own people with minimal intervention, provided that Ottoman leadership is ensured and that taxes are being conformed to. These was equally observed towards their conquered people. 2. Why do you think the 3 empires did not unite into huge empire? Although the Safavid, Mughal and Ottoman empires all share a Turko-Mongolian heritage, because of the differences in their respective cultural backgrounds and rivalries, they were not able to become one. Ottoman Empire was Islamic, the Safavis was theocratic-following the Shi'a Twelver Doctrine, while the Mughals was of religious tolerance. Ultimately, their religious, cultural and military tolerance became a hindrance for their unification. Submitted by: Josette O. Bonador BSEd 3-Social Studies...
