Is Google Making Us Stupid? Is google making us stupid? No, google does not make us stupid. I argue that it just makes us lazy and more reliant on the internet. Nicholas Carr does mention how hard it has become to staying focused. Along with the new and advanced technology, he argues that it affects our intelligence. With my personal experience, I can relate to most of the reading. I do believe google, the internet and technology has become important. I argue that it makes us lazy and more reliant on the internet. However, I do agree with some of Nicholas and his acquaintances sources throughout the reading. What I do not agree with is the title. People have become so immune to using google they will

automatically think to ask to google before using their mind. Google can not personally make you stupid. Nicholas Carr used a source from Maryanne Wolf, a Psychologist at Tufts University. She stated that “reading isn’t an instinctive skill for human beings.” So now that we have google reading becomes less important. Nicholas Carr does mention how hard it has become to staying focused. Using the internet has really affected the way people interpret things versus reading a book. Its been said people avoid reading because its easier to use google, or a different source. A blogger Scott Karp says he has stopped reading books altogether. “I was a lit major in college and used to be a voracious book reader.” Constant reading of long paragraphs will cause you to become bored or exhausted while reading. Nicholas said himself “My concentration often starts to drift after two or three pages.” Which is why he can argue that using so much technology

throughout the years has affected him to staying focused. That could be a potential reason people tend to use google so much. Along with the new and advanced technology, he argues that it affects our intelligence. He added over the years that his brain has changed. Although he was never able to scientifically prove that everyone’s brain information was to change. I feel technology has made our way of thinking more advanced. The new generation will be able to have a better way of learning, inventing, and discovering things thanks to the technology used today. Opposed to decades ago when inventors did not have the equipped technology we have now. So, I just agree that technology we use today could very much expand the way of thinking. Everything in today’s world is ran from technology. From cell phones, smart tv’s, computers, and even refrigerators now. With my personal experience, I can relate to most of the reading. As I read the article, I was exhausted. It was very long, and had several passages. Bruce Friedman a blogger said “A blog post of more than three or four paragraphs is too much to absorb. I skim it.” Reading this article made me want to skim through it. Having to read all those long paragraphs made me want to take an easier route and use google. I constantly lost track of my where I was reading. I would have to double back several times. My concentration was off. I would have to keep stopping any analyze what I had just read. It is simpler to just use the internet or

google to a quicker response. Which is why technology, the internet and google makes us lazy. In conclusion, this reading says we spend a lot of time on the internet instead of reading books. Nicholas does use a great deal of rhetorical sources. But you can not connect them together to say, “google makes us stupid”. Me personally I think it is just his opinion that google makes us stupid. When it is just an easier source to collect information quicker other than reading a book with long passages that will make you bored and uninterested in what you’re reading....
