Description of Procedure an invasive procedure for visualization of upper repiratory tract (treachea, larynx and bronchi) for diagnosis and management. Using either a rigid bronchoscope or flexible fiber optic bronchoscope

Indications -visualization of abnormalities -biopsy of suspicious tissue ( ex lung cancer) -aspiration of deep sputum or lung abcesses for C & S test

Interpretation of Findings can identify airway problems, cancer and/or lung disease

Potential Complications

CONSIDERATIONS

Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) pre: check for allergies to anesthetic agents or routine use of anticoagulants, ensure consent form is signed, give preop meds intra: position client in sitting or supine, assist in collecting and labeling specimens, monitor VS,respiratory status & O2 levels post: continue to monitor all VS closely & LOC, monitor for development of fever Client Education watch for fever, chest pain or any discomfort, dyspnea, or wheezing do not eat or drink till gag reflex returns DO NOT SMOKE after procedure call MD if hoarseness, sore throat, bleeding or respiratory difficulty develop

Nursing Interventions

lanyrngospasm- uncontrolled muscle contractions of the vocal cords

continously monitor for manifestations of respiratory distress

pneumothorax- can occur following a rigid bronchoscopy

check for diminished or absent breath sounds, change in O2 sat., or sudden onset of chest pains or tightness

aspiration- can occur if client chokes on oral or gastric secretions

withhold oral fluids until gag reflex returns perform suctioning as needed
