Name _____________________________________ Substance Brochure Research Log Name of Substance: History (discovery, what was it used for in the past, how did people make/find it, etc.) Humans first started working with metal during the bronze age.Bronze tools and weapons soon replaced earlier stone versions. Ancient Sumerians are believed to be the first people to enter the Bronze Age. Humans may have started smelting copper as early as 6,000 B.C. in the Fertile Crescent, a historical area of the Middle East where agriculture and the world’s first cities emerged. Ancient Sumer may have been the first civilization to start adding tin to copper to make bronze. Bronze was harder and more durable than copper, which made bronze a better metal for tools and weapons.Archaeological evidence suggests the transition from copper to bronze took place around 3300 B.C. The invention of bronze brought an end to the Stone Age, the prehistoric period dominated by the use of stone tools and weaponry. PROPERTIES Chemical Properties (at least 3) Physical Properties (at least 4)  Bronze is insoluble in water.  Bronze is ductile.  Bronze is a good conductor of heat.  Bronze is a good conductor of electricity.  Bronze is harder than copper or iron.  Bronze is copper-colored.  Bronze is odourless.

Bronze can oxidize in air, resulting in a thin film of copper oxide on the surface. Bronze can react with many pollutants, especially those containing sulfur compounds. Bronze is stable at room temperature.

Uses Bronze is used in architecture for structural and design elements, for bearings because of its friction properties. Bronze is also used in musical instruments, electrical contracts, and ship propellers. Bronze is also useful due to its reluctance to flammability. They use it to make spark free tools. Coins, medals, and sculptures may also be made from bronze. Picture: cover photo

Which properties allow it to be used for those purposes? Explain. Bronze’s quality of being a good conductor allows it to be used in electrical contracts. It being hard and in soluble in water also allows it to be used as a ship propeller.
