Bruner's Model of the Perceptual Process
● When we encounter an unfamiliar target, we are very open to the informational cues in the target and the situation. ● We will actively seek out cues to resolve ambiguity. ● As we encounter some familiar cues, a crude categorization of the target is made. ● The search for cues then becomes less open and more selective. ● We search for cues that confirm the categorization of the target. Basic Biases in Person Perception Primary effect: The tendency for a preceiver to rely on early cues/first impressions. Recency effect: The tendency for a preceiver to rely on recent cues/last impressions. Central Traits: Personal characteristics of a target person that are of interest to a perceiver. (ex. Education & University or Physical Appearance) Reliance on Central Traits: People tend to organize their perceptions around central traits.
Implicit Personality Theories: Personal theories that people have about which personality characteristics go together. We may expect a hardworking person to be honest (hardworking → honest) If such implicit theories are inaccurate, they provide a bias for misunderstanding. Projection: The tendency for perceivers to attribute their own thoughts and feelings onto others. (I’m feeling good today so my friends should too)...
