CourseDescription Howdoorganizationssuchasfinancialinstitutions,healthcareproviders,manufacturingplants,andtech companiesmeetcustomerneedsandstayconsistentwiththeirgoalsandvalues?Howdoorganizations maketrade‐offdecisionswithrespecttoquality,cost,andtime?OperationsManagementprovidestools andmethodstoanswerthesequestionssystematicallyintheglobalbusinessworld. Operationsmanagersareprimarilyconcernedwiththedesign,procurement,production,anddeliveryof goodsandservices.Theyareresponsibleforplanning,designing,operating,controllingandimprovingthe variousprocurement,production,storage,andshippingprocessesinvolved,fromthetimetheproductor serviceisdesigneduntilcustomerdelivery occurs.Thechallengeforoperations managersistoproduce goodsandservices anddeliver theminan efficientmanneraccordingto thebusinessstrategyoftheir company.Typically,thisinvolvesbalancingthetrade‐offsbetweensatisfyingcustomerdemand,on‐time delivery,lowercosts,andhigherquality.
CourseLearningGoals In this course, you will learn the fundamentals of Operations Management, enhance your managerial insightandintuition,andimproveyourbusinessdecisions. Thefocusof thiscourseisontheMarshallUndergraduate LearningGoals(seepp.15‐16 ofthesyllabus foracompletedescription)of“understandingkeybusinessareas”and“developingcriticalthinkingskills,” whilealsosupporting the goalof“beingeffectivecommunicators.”Uponsuccessfulcompletion ofthis course,studentswillbeableto: Describethespectrumofoperationsmanagementactivitiesinabusiness,andthetypesofdecisions madebyoperationsmanagers. Utilize a variety of tools and techniques effectively to compete successfully in the marketplace, including:

o BusinessProcessManagement. o CapacityManagement. o WaitingLineManagement. o Optimization. o RevenueManagement. o InventoryandSupplyChainManagement. Predict, anticipate, and take into account how operations management interfaces with other functionalareassuchasstrategy,accounting,finance,humanresources,andmarketing. Demonstratecriticalthinkingskillstoassesstrade‐offsinprocessdesign,capacityallocation,inventory levels,andcustomerservice. Applyoptimizationtoolsandtechniquestopracticalproblems;forexample,usetheExcelSolver to formulateandsolvealinearoptimizationproblem. Applycriticalthinkingandproblem‐solving andmake real‐timedecisions on capacity, quoted lead‐ times,work‐in‐processlevels,contracts,andinventory. Makeoperationaldecisionstakingintoaccounttheglobalnatureofsupplychains(viaanexperiential learning simulation), the interplay between levels of the supply chain and their locations, and its implicationsforpricing,competitionandcustomerservice.

Formostoftheclass,lecturenotesandmaterialsonblackboardwillbesufficient.Someoftherequired cases,however,arepublishedinourcustomtextbook.You may choosetopurchaseacopy,borrowa friend’s,oruseoneofthecopiesonreservebelow. ClassAttendance&Participation Students are expected to attend all class sessions in their enrolled section. Your participation score is basedonyourcontributionsto thelecturesincluding,butnotlimited tothoughtfullyresponding tothe instructor’s prompts; asking questions; answering other students’ questions; and sharing personal or professionalexperiencesrelatedtocoursecontent. BUAD 311 involves several simulation games, particularly in the second half of the course. Your performanceonthesesimulationgames willbetakenintoaccountwhen computingyour participation grade.

MidtermsandFinalExam Therearetwomidtermexamsandonefinalexam,allofwhicharecumulative,butgreateremphasiswill begiventomaterialssincethepreviousexam. Allexamsareclosedbooks.Each studentmaybringone letter‐sized (8.5”x11”) double‐sided crib sheet for each exam. Each student should also bring a stand‐ alonecalculatorcapableofpowerandsquarerootoperations.Studentsmaynotsharethesamecribsheet orcalculatorduringa test.Collaboration ofanysort onexamsisstrictlyprohibited and willresult in an “F”inthecoursegrade.Anysuspicionofcheatingwillbe reported and investigated byUSC. Pleasesee the“AcademicIntegrityandConduct”sectionbelowforfurtherdetails.
