Description

1. Body checking behaviors are obsessive thoughts about one’s own body appearance. Somebody checking behaviors that Rita engaged in are constantly weighing herself from ages 14-25, follow a diet, check her body shape and size, and stare at herself in the mirror. 2. Binges for Rita included binging on food, because her diet was so restricted. They were food she thought of as bad and often fast food or unhealthy. She would feel revulsion after and that would cause her to fast and then after things got worse, she began making herself throw up, and excessive working out. 3. Rita began to seek treatment, because she couldn’t lose weight, and she was scared she would go to more extreme behaviors. 4. The cognitive behavior model of the maintenance of bulimia nervosa is that Rita’s thought and actions led her to binging, first she needs to control weight and eating, which led to her dietary restrictions, in turns make her hungry. These cognitive thoughts led to binge eating and some behaviors include vomiting, laxatives, and excessive exercise. 5. Advantages to keep a record of her eating behaviors are it makes sure that she doesn’t skip lunch like she was doing and continue to make changes to her meals to make them more like the average persons, and to help visualize how much she was binging and eating to help reduce them. Dr.Heston explained that binging was the least of her concerns right now because she couldn’t control it right now, but she could control whether she eats lunch or not. Rita was reluctant to do this, because she didn’t want to gain extra calories and she felt like a blimp if she didn’t skip meals.

6. Two medical problems that occur with bringing and purging, are very irregular menstrual periods, and it ruins your teeth from the hydrochloric acid from the vomit. 7. Two of the exposure exercises that Dr. Heston asked Rita to do is to eat the donut on the scale to see if Rita’s weight would change, and Rita thought this would make her gain 2 pounds, although it did not make her weight change at all. Rita felt reluctant at first and scared that the scale would go up. He then expanded the exercise to Rita would slowly eat the foods that scared her, “bad foods”, without purging, to lessen her fear. Rita was also scared that that would make her scale skyrocket, but still it did not change. Another exposure exercise was that Rita would wear a sweater and other activities that limit what she was allowed to do. Dr. Heston suggested that she remove a bulky sweater for 1-2 hours per day. Rita thought one of her coworkers gave her a disapproving look because she was fat, but Rita also pushed those thoughts out of her mind and thought more positive thoughts....
