(10 pts) Give a short description of three things you learned from this reading (Max 3 sentences each). a. The tobacco industry stood up to lawsuits claiming a relationship between smoking and lung cancer even up to 1979, not giving any financial settlements even, despite a scientific study claimed the dangers of smoking in 1953. b. The tobacco industry used the idea of doubt to lessen the blow of scientific studies showing the link between smoking and cancer, calling for debates and more evidence all the while asking more and more questions. c. The tobacco industry gave over $6 million to research in 1981 alone! In that same year, the American Cancer Society and the American Lung Cancer Association. 2. The use of science in proving a side in industry/business/personal financial interests is extremely important. People look to scientific evidence as hard facts, or truth regarding a certain issue. Scientists are often regarded as experts in their field of study. b. Smoking is a “principal etiological factor” in the rising amount of lung cancer cases. While other exposures also cause lung cancer, none are more prominent a risk factor than smoking. 3. (5 pts) Give one question you still have after completing the reading.
