Leadership Reflective Essay I am on my way in becoming a great leader. Some of the skills that I have as a leader is being emotionally intelligent. With being emotionally intelligent, I can understand the emotions of myself and others. This enables me to have great relationships with people. Concurrently, people feel comfortable approaching me for advice. As a leader, it is crucial to have a great level of trust with staff to ensure comfortableness and cohesiveness. In addition to being emotional intelligent, my personality is built around openness, conscientiousness, and agreeableness. There are some people that have great leadership skills, but it is known that there are areas in which everyone had to practice and build to become a great leader. Some areas that I wish to improve is being able to say no to certain things. I am known for trying to accommodate others before myself and my priorities. I would also like to learn how to motivate and inspire others to do well and obtain a path of success for their selves. Before attempting to master the leadership role, one must first be successful as a follower. If you cannot follow a leader, but obtain a leadership role, one will have a greater chance to fail since they lack the proper experience needed to understand the group of people that contribute to the success of the team or company. In certain situations, one can obtain the role of both a leader and follower. For example, for a project, one can lead the team and divvy up tasks, however, if help is needed of if someone has a great idea that they want to implement, you can assume the role of a follower to see the plan through. Followership is the fundamentals of leadership. A great number of skills and attributes are learned as a follower. When taking the path to become a leader, those skills are fine-tuned while working on new skills.

My leadership style is democratic/participative. Like a democracy government, my preference is to have others involved in decision making processes. The democratic/participative style makes the followers feel more involved in the structure of the organization. As an employee at a medical institution, I understand how it feels to not have the empowerment important decisions that significantly impact the duties of myself and peers. With me utilizing the democratic/participative style, I would allow the professionals of certain areas come together to come up with a decision that would help everyone. This leadership style has a downside as well, which is the delayed response time to obtain a decision in a critical situation. A great style to use simultaneously would be an autocratic style. According to Soomo Learning (2020), “autocratic leadership is a leadership style where the leader makes the decisions, tells the employees what to do, and closely supervises workers while primarily using a coercive power strategy to motive compliance” (p. 3.4). In urgent situations where a decision needs to be made on the spot, this leadership style can be used to where the decision by the leader is put in place in which takes little to no time.
