Description

Alexandra Posadzki, wrote the Newspaper Article with a concerned tone, in order to alert the target audience – newspaper readers - about the inadequate level of gender diversity present on the executive level in companies. With the use of facts conveyed in a concerning tone, sources from the law firm- Osler Hoskin and Harcourt LLP-, instigated an increasing amount of pressure from Stakeholders, regulators and legislators to push companies to improve their gender diversity; most especially when concerned with critical roles within the organisations. From the article, it is evident that a good number of researches were conducted before producing such an epic piece. According to the article, there is no denying the fact that very few women are offered executive positions in organizations and an example of where this is vividly portrayed states that “women occupied, on average, 15.8 per cent of the executive officer positions at TSX-listed companies, up marginally from 15 per cent, where it has sat for the past three years”. As a result of the concerned tone of the article, it can be viewed that the level of research conducted could be of a biased nature because she did not compare her results and findings from Osler to different companies. Thus, resulting in different reactions and responses from newspaper readers; most especially from the female readers. The sources of this article were derived mostly from newspaper articles, this can be viewed as an advantage and a disadvantage. Basing a paper mostly on newspaper sources could increase the level of confidence because newspaper articles are good sources of primary events. It was through newspaper reports that Alexandra was able to provide facts to back up her discussion. However, this is also a disadvantage because the information gotten from such sources may be biased and opinions on such writing could be misinterpreted, leading to unwanted reactions and responses from the audience. Moreover, basing an article or a report on newspaper articles can lead to fake news. Fake news can be defined as news that consists

of deliberate disinformation spread through newspapers or online social media. According to this article, “the pace of change [is] moving from 11 per cent in the first year to 12 per cent in the second year and 14 per cent in the third. At the current rate, it will take decades before women hold 50 per cent of the board seats at large public companies, Mr. MacDougall said.” This statement can serve as an example of fake news because there has been no concrete proof to show that it will take decades for women to hold 50 percent of board seats. Fake news on the other hand can lead to bullshit responses; bullshit is a slang for the term nonsense most especially when a statement or an action has been falsely said. However, we can see that MacDougall came to this conclusion because of the percentage at which the change is moving. Overall, the newspaper article written by Alexandra Posadzki, was to notify the target audience of the pressing need to correct the issue of disproportionate level of gender diversity in organizations. The article can be viewed as factual, as it incorporates various facts and statistics, but leans towards being biased as all facts and evidence come from only one main side; which is in her favour. This is in addition to the concerned tone which is laced into her writing in order to elicit the right reaction from her readers....
