THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BUSINESS CULTURE OF VIET NAM AND OTHER COUNTRIES In 2018, Vietnam was home to around 26,000 foreign direct investment (FDI) projects with total registered capital of nearly US$350 billion (the speech by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc at World Economic Forum, Davos, Switzerland). Vietnam also has become the destination of many foreigners from different countries to live and work. Within this assignment, our team invited five different guests from five different countries and collected what they think about the differences between business culture of Viet Nam and their home country. Nowadays, Vietnam opens and welcomes investors from other countries come and do business in Vietnam. Hence, it also brings the food cultures from their home countries to Vietnam. In Vietnam, the culture of eating tends to share the food with each other. It is very important for Vietnamese to show their love when they share the food with the people that they love. Doing business of pizza is very successful business in Vietnam since a round of pizza serves pre-cut and share the smaller pieces with each other. That is the reason why pizza business is getting bigger in Vietnam and there are more and more pizza restaurants open in Vietnam. However, comparison with other kind of western food such as burger, it is inconvenient to share with other people because it is serves for individual meal. That is the reason why Burger King and Mc’s Donald is difficult to develop their business in Vietnam. By the way, we have the interview with Mr. Stefano at 9:00 am at Tan Son Nhat Airport, Vietnam who works as Sales Director Asean/Asia/Oceania at Medical & Pharma at Multivac Sepp Haggenmüller, came from Italy - the origin of Pizza. In the restaurant, a round of pizza is served on a plate without precutting slices and not for sharing. It serves as an individual eating only. In some places in United States or in Europe, the Pizza might be pre-cut slices, if you want you can share with other. However, is not making for share. The different culture making different kind of business between Vietnam and Italy. In Vietnam, the way you run the business differently such as the size of food: bigger pizza because you can share, the price is a little higher than the average and more flavour than normal. If you know this culture, you can organize better your business in Vietnam. Having an opportunity to speak with Mr. Martin Starigazda at 10: 00 am at his office, who came from Slovak Republic. He works as Project Director at CZ Slovakia Vietnam. He shared his perceives about the differences of business culture between Vietnam and Europe or Slovakia in particular. Apart from the differences of cultures and religions, the business culture is more straightforward in Slovakia than in Vietnam. Most of things describe either in black or white as well as clearly disagree and agree with other’s opinions in the discussion in Slovakia. He explained that “face” in Vietnam is extremely important in life as well as in business environment, therefore people normally pretend to agree with other’s opinions although they do not. Besides, the most important thing in Vietnam is building relationship. If you have wide business relationship, it will take shorter to get to the point as well as important information.

Our next guest interview is Mr. Cory at 05:04 pm at ILA office, who came from America. He has been in Vietnam for around 3 years, so he has so many experiences in daily communication which includes business communication. Through the interview, Cory mentioned some huge problems which he was confused in communication with Vietnamese. First of all, Curriculum vitae in Vietnam usually has applicant’s picture and personal information, but in America it does not have any information as mention in resume. Secondly, the Vietnamese daily communication style is really direct. For instance, if Vietnamese co-workers want someone to help for something, they will send the request directly to other co-workers. However, if American has a request for somebody, they will use some polite phrase as “Could you please help me…?”/ “Can you do me a favor…please?” to ask for help. Sometimes, Vietnamese across rudeness in the usual communication even in the workplace, but in America there are no same situation happened. American always has their own space in communication with variety distances which use to define your relationship with owner. For example, American will not touch or hug co-worker/teacher without special reason at the workplace. Although American always has their own big bubble to protect themselves, Vietnamese’ bubble is smaller distance. For example, Cory’s Vietnamese students always want to touch or stroke his long fur as a pet without any permission. A special guest from South Africa – Mr. Fernando Limar, the interview occurred at 05:30 pm at the The Coffee House who has 25 years’ experience in accounting and auditing has lived in Vietnam for three years, he can recognize some differences in business culture between Vietnam and his home country. In terms of email responses, South African usually replies email in few hours or sooner. But in Vietnam, he was surprised that it took few days or weeks for him to get the email responses. He shared with us that when he applied his Curriculum vitae to a company in Vietnam, two months later he got an job offer from HR department. Within that two months, he absolutely can get a better job instead of waiting. One more difference he mentioned in the interview was about the power of leader. In Vietnam, he found that most of leaders cannot manage their staff well. For example, leaders and managers can manage as well as control their employees all about the time, responsibilities and also working volume in his home country. Our last guest is Mr. Jaypamthy – Sr. Manager audit function of Ansell, came from an island country in South Asia, located in the Indian Ocean to the southwest of the Bay of Bengal and to the southeast of the Arabian. The most differences of business cultures between Vietnam and his home country is the standard of financial report. Company must apply the International Financial Report Standard (“IFRS”). Meanwhile Vietnam regulation still apply the local reporting standard, which is the Vietnamese Accounting Standards (“VAS”). He also mentioned the barrier of English speakers between Vietnam and his country. Many English speakers can be found in his home country rather than Vietnam. The waves of foreign investment bring a numbers of work forces from other countries to Vietnam, which makes diverse the business cultures in Vietnam. This is not only the opportunities for locals and foreigners to exchange business cultures but also creating business-expanding and lifeenriching relationship...
