CAE ReviewWriting Guide
A review is a special type of article written for publication in a magazine, newspaper, etc giving a brief description and evaluation of the film, book, play, TV/ radio programme, etc . It may be formal or semi-formal in style, depending on its intended readership, and is usually written using present tenses.Your review should be between 220-260 words. Please see the attached sheets for suitable grammatical structures and language which you should try to use in your review. However, a lot of descriptive and comparative language is essential. A wide range of adjectives are needed and combining adverbs and adjectives will help. It’s important to write your review in the correct style. Compare the following sentences…… 1. The music in the film was good, each track was well chosen and added to the feel of the film as I watched it. 2. The soundtrack was immaculately put together, each track chosen with meticulously care, helping to take the viewer on an emotional roller coaster ride as the film progresses. Your review should include a title and be four paragraphs long. An introduction, a paragraph stating good points, a paragraph stating bad points and a final paragraph stating who you would recommend it to.
It is also important to try and use as much specific vocabulary as possible related to the topic you are reviewing. For example, if you are reviewing a film using language like film set, cinematography, protagonists, stars, actors, director, producer, soundtrack, cast, script etc. is essential. Paragraph one: Introduction. This paragraph should give an introduction to what you are reviewing, including basic information to set the scene for the target reader. So for a film review you might include: the title, director, main actors, when and when the film is set and a short synopsis. Example. Recently I watched one of this year’s blockbuster films ‘Avengers:End Game’’. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and starring actors such as Robert Downey Jnr, Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson, End Game sees our favourite super heroes save the world one last time, as this saga, based on the Marvel comics of the same name, comes to a thrilling climax. Paragraph 2: In this paragraph you should highlight what was good about the thing you are reviewing. Try to use specific vocabulary related to the topic and lots of descriptive. Example: One of my favourite things about this film was the special effects. The amazing use of digital
technology really brought these fictional characters to life and made the impossible seem an everyday occurrence for this courageous gang of crime fighters. This paragraph is also a good place to include: 1. An inverted conditional. Had I known Robert Downey Jnr was such a talented actor, I would have watched many more of his films. 2. Inversion for emphatic purposes. Not only is Chris Evans devilishly handsome, but shows, in this role, his undoubted comedic ability as an actor. 3. Participle Clauses. Having watched all the other films in this saga, to say I was excited before watching this film is an understatement. 4. Cleft sentences. It was the imaginative writing that impressed me most about this film.
Paragraph 3: In this paragraph you should list the things that you did not like about the thing you are reviewing. Try to use specific vocabulary related to the topic and lots of descriptive language. Example: The finale of this film was unfortunately a bit of an anti-climax. It was always going to be difficult to write an ending which pleased everyone. However, the film climaxed in a disappointingly predictable way that will undoubtedly leave fans with a bitter taste in their mouths. This paragraph is also a good place to include grammatical structures such as: Inverted conditionals, inversion for emphatic purposes, participle clauses and cleft sentences. (see paragraph 2 for examples)
Conclusion: In your conclusion you should make a recommendation stating who would be best suited for the thing you are reviewing. This is a good place to include an inverted conditional sentence. Example: Were I to recommend this film to anyone, it would be super hero fanatics. So, should you be at a loose end this weekend and are a lover of action packed, high
drama movies, then head on down to your local cinema where you can see the fight between good and evil take one more dramatic twist.
