1. How does the intake of calcium compare with the RDI for: a. A woman aged between 19 and 50? (RDI is 18mg/day for iron and 1000mg/day for calcium). Comment. This is under consumption of both of the micro nutrients for the day. Low calcium intake could lead to bone structure could be weak, osteoporosis, neurological disorder (tetany). It’s worth to have more calcium, which would increase growth, enzyme creation, muscle fibers, blood clotting cascade. Iron  under consumption as well. This can lead to iron deficiency, which can be fatigue, lethargy, declined cognitive function, weakened immune system. Female would require more iron because of menstruation. She loses blood cells which are made of iron. She would require more calcium because estrogen levels change after menopause, making her more susceptible to osteoporosis. Estrogen protects the bones! b. A male aged 19 or over? (RDI is 8mg/day for iron and 1000mg/day for calcium). Comment. Male is overconsuming iron, but that’s really okay. Just because you’re slightly lower or higher doesn’t mean you are at risk for something. c. A pregnant woman? (RDI is 27mg/day for iron and 1000-1300mg/day for calcium). Comment. Under consumption of both micronutrients. You need more nutrients in your body in order for the development of the fetus. An under consumption of 2. Go through the provided NRV pages and find 7 foods/drinks that are high in calcium and iron that would be a good addition to the diet. Calcium: Dairy products, Orange juice, sunlight Iron: meat, dried herbs...
