Expected Pharmacological Action Maintanence of musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiovascular function
Therapeutic Use Hypocalcemia or deficiencies of parathyroid hormone, vitamin D, or dietary calcium
Complications Hypercalcemia (tachycardia and elevated BP leading to bradycardia and hypotension, muscle weakness, hypotonia, constipation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, lethargy, and confusion)
Medication Administration Chewable tablets provide more consistent bioavailability
Contraindications/Precautions Hypercalcemia, renal calculi, hypophosphatemia, digoxin toxicity, ventricular fibrillation, kidney disease, and decreased GI function
Interactions Glucocorticoids reduce absorption Calcium reduces absorption of tetracyclines and thyroid hormones Thiazide diuretics increases risk of hypercalcemia Spinach, rhubarb, beets, bran, and whole grains can decrease absoption Concurrent use with digoxin and parenteral calcium can lead to severe bradycardia
