-Inform the parents to use an approved rear-facing car seat in the back seat, preferably in the middle (away from air bags and side impact), to transport the newborn. -Instruct the parents of the newborn to keep infants in rear-facing car seats until age 2 or until the child reaches the maximum height and weight for car seat

Promoting Comfort - Prevent infection - Apply ice or cold packs in the perineum - Encourage sitz baths at least twice a day - Administer analgesics - Apply topical anesthetics to perineal area or which hazel compresses to the rectal area.

- Wash hands throughly before and after voiding

- Promote comfort - Use squeeze bottle w/ warm water or antiseptic solution after each voiding. -clean the perineal area from front to back - Blot dry, do not wipe -Use topical application of antiseptic cream or spray sparingly - Change perineal pad from front to back after voiding and defecating

PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Expected Pharmacological Action Inhibits calcium transport into myocardial and vascular smooth muscle cells, resulting in inhibition of excitation-contraction coupling and subsequent contraction.

Therapeutic Use Systemic vasodilation, resulting in decreased blood pressure. Coronary vasodilation, resulting in decreased frequency and severity of attacks of angina.

Complications CNS: headache, abnormal dreams, anxiety, confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, jitteriness, nervousness, psychiatric disturbances, weakness. EENT: blurred vision, disturbed equilibrium, epistaxis, tinnitus. Resp: cough, dyspnea, shortness of breath. CV: ARRHYTHMIAS, CHF, peripheral edema, bradycardia, chest pain, hypotension, palpitations syncope, tachycardia. GI: abnormal liver function studies, anorexia, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, dysgeusia, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting. GU: dysuria, nocturia, polyuria, sexual dysfunction, urinary frequency. Derm: flushing, dermatitis, erythema multiforme, increased sweating, photosensitivity, pruritus/urticaria, rash. Endo: gynecomastia, hyperglycemia. Hemat: anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia. Metab: weight gain. MS: joint stiffness, muscle cramp Neuro: paresthesia, tremor. Misc: STEVENS-JOHNSON SYNDROME, gingival hyperplasia.

Medication Administration 10 mg, 20 mg capsules; 30 mg, 60 mg, 90 mg sustained release tablets

Contraindications/Precautions Cardiogenic shock; advanced aortic stenosis; acute angina; porphyria; within a month of myocardial infarction.

Interactions BETA BLOCKERS may increase likelihood of CHF; may increase risk of phenytoin toxicity. Herbal: Melatonin may increase blood pressure and heart rate.

Nursing Interventions Monitor BP carefully during titration period. Patient may become severely hypotensive, especially if also taking other drugs known to lower BP. Withhold drug and notify physician if systolic BP...
