Description of Skill Artificial airways and tracheostomy care: performing proper care using sterile technique.

Indications Emergency or scheduled surgical procedure, needing assisstance for respiration, respiratory failure, upper airway obstruction, anaphylaxis

Outcomes/Evaluation If the patient can tolerate, take patient off of artifical airway. Humidification may be provided to reduce mucous plug. Patent airway with no respiratory distress.

Potential Complications Accidental decannulation or damage to trachea.

CONSIDERATIONS

Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) PRE - gather supplied, assess patient INTRA - use sterile technique, ensure sterile field is sterile, keep patient oxygenated in between suctioning POST - assess patient for respiratory distress

Client Education use tools to communicate (paper, pen, board) report SOB Do oral care every 2 hours keep room clean (no dust)

Nursing Interventions Monitor patient for respiraotry distress Monitor their skin integrity around the placement of the equipment provide tracheostomy care every 8 hours....
