PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action - The acidic environment of the stomach & duodenum changes sucralfate into a protective barrier that adheres to an ulcer . This protect the ulcer from further injury from acid and pepsin. - This vicious substance can stick to the ulcer for up to 6 hrs.
Therapeutic Use - Treatment of acute duodenal ulcers and maintenance therapy - Neutralize or reduce the acidity of gastric acid; can reduce pepsin activity if the pH is raised above 5 - Investigational use of sucralfate includes gastric ulcers and GERD
Complications - There are no systemic effects because sucralfate is minimally absorbed and most of its eliminated in the feces. - Constipation
Medication Administration Oral Administration: - Use drug solubilized in an appropriate diluent - Administer antacids prescribed for pain 30 min before or after - Separate admistration of quinlones, digoxin, phenytoin, tetracycline by hours
Contraindications/Precautions - Pregnancy Risk Category B - Contraindicated in clients who are hypersensitive to the medication - Use cautiously in clients who have chronic kidney disease or diabetes mellitus
Interactions - Can interfere with the absorption of phenytoin, digoxin, warfarin, and ciprofloxacin - Antacids interfere with the effects of sucralfate o
Nursing Interventions - Assess for abdominal pain and frank or occult blood stool. - Administer 1 hr. before meals & at bedtime. - Tablet may be broken or dissolved in water before ingestion - Avoid antacids 30 min before or after administration - Consult pharmacist if NG administration required
Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness - Decrease in abdominal pain
