Expected Pharmacological Action -Acidic enviornment of the stomach and duodenum changes sucralfate into a protective barrier that adheres to an ulcer. -Protects ulcer from further injury from acid and pepsin -Sticks to ulcer for up to 6 hours
Therapeutic Use -Treatment of acute duodenal ulcers and maintenance therapy -Neutralize or reduce the acidity of gastric acid; can reduce pepsin activity if pH is raised above 5 -Investigational use of sucralfate includes gastric ulcers and GERD
Complications -Constipation
Medication Administration -Pregnancy Risk Category B -Administer 1 hour before meals and at bedtime -Do not crush tablet, may dissolve in water -Give 30 mins before or 30 mins after taking antiacids
Contraindications/Precautions -Pregnancy Risk Category B -Contraindicted in clients who are hypertensive to this medication -Use cautiously in clients who have chronic kidney disease or diabetes mellitus
Nursing Interventions -Monitor clients with diabetes/monitor glucose -Monitor clients with chronic kidney disease
Interactions -Phenytoin, digoxin, warfarin, ciprofloxacin -Antiacids
