Dream It, Design It, 3D Print It For almost 30 years, 3D printing has been used by large manufacturing companies to create everything from custom parts to working prototypes. The medical industry uses 3D printing to create custom hearing aids, artificial limbs, and braces, and art designers and architects use 3D printers to create models and prototypes of statues and buildings. Traditionally, 3D printing was only available to large corporations and engineers who could code the intricate devices. Today, the first generation of consumer 3D printers is hitting the market at affordable prices with software easy enough for children to use.

3D printers work by first creating a digital computer-aided design (CAD) file, produced with a 3D modelling program or scanned into a 3D modelling program with a 3D scanner. To get from this digital file to instructions that the 3D printer understands, software then slices the design into hundreds or thousands of horizontal layers. Typically, the 3D printer uses either a fused deposition modelling printer, which applies the tiny layers of material, or a laser sintering process by which a laser fuses the material together. QUESTIONS 10 marks 1. Define 3D printing and its impact on business. 3D printing is the process of copying a digital file and then making a threedimensional object that is solid from it (3dprinting.com, 2012). This process can also be defined as additive manufacturing. 3D printing is beneficial to business is various ways. For instance, 3D printing is used in serial production which is economical to businesses. It increases the data volume as well as processing, improve analytics, human factors and automation.

15 marks 2. Explain CRM and how 3D printing could affect customer relations. CRM is a technology that enables the management if a company’s relationship and relations with their customers (Salesforce.com, 2020). Its objective is simply to improve business relations by helping the company stay linked to customers and improve profits. 3D printing enables customers to print objects on their own, thereby reducing their dependency on manufactures. This will reduce the relations with companies and therefore affect the company’s customer relations (Steven V. B., 2016) 3. Provide an example of how 3D printing might affect the global economy. 15 marks Since 3D printing can be regarded as a component if a maker movement, it’s significant to communities, entrepreneurship and education. For example, the knowledge can be taught to the children in schools so that they get the concepts and skills. The skills will then foster the generation of novel products as well as companies which will create both professional and technical jobs thereby improving the economy (Gewirtz, D., 2019). 4. Analyze how 3D printing is affecting supply chains. 15 marks 3D printing is necessary for manufacturing that are short run as well as jobs that are of small production. It usually permits the storage of spare parts in the cloud hence the physical inventory will not be needed until a demand arises. When the 3D materials all over the world are delivered in digital form, it will save on cost and time which will be efficient and reliable (Gewirtz, D., 2019).

5. Propose a plan for how a company can use 3D printing to increase sales and customer satisfaction. In your answer identify the company and the business process involved. The companies can use the following plans to increase their sales and customer satisfaction by using 3D printing technology. The companies can increase the sales by encouraging the advantages of 3D printer; few of the promotional statements are as follows: • If you lost your beloved pets, then you can create the plastic replica of your pet by using 3D printer. • If you want to own a 3D printer, then it is very easy because the cost of the printer is started by “$300”. • If you lost your car’s roof rack key, then you can simply draw and print the key within few minutes. • If you want to gift some special things to your loved one, then you can simply draw the things and gift them.

The three dimensional printing technology is really an amazing product to the printing world; the large manufacturing corporations are using this technology for past 30 years to create required objects. The medical industries use 3D printers to create hearing aids, dental braces, and artificial limbs for physically challenged. The architects use 3D printers to create model of statues and buildings. Early, the 3D printers are available only for large corporations and engineers but nowadays it is available for reasonable price so that anybody can use it.

Argue for or against the following statement: “3D printing will be more 20 marks disruptive to business than the Internet.” After analysing the given statement “3D printing will be more disruptive to business than the Internet”, it can be concluded that the statement is “true”. In the given statement, the 3D printer has been considered as the disruptive technology. The disruptive technology is a newly rising technology; it refers to a technology, which displaces the established technology. Comment Early, Internet has been considered as disruptive to business; but after introducing the 3D printers, the 3D printers are considered as more disruptive to the business. This is because nowadays anybody can purchase a 3D printer for $300 to $5000; it can relate to Wi-Fi network and can

create own 3D objects. These 3D printers offer different collection of colours and materials. The consumers can create objects for their own use, like creating valentine chocolates, plastics toys and so on.
