SYNOPSIS OF THE CASE STUDY

In 1997, Steve Jobs cofounded Apple successfully rescue from bankcrupt and build into the worlds most valuable company and help to transform seven industries which is personal computing, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, retail store and digital publishing. He also became a family in the pantheon of America’s great innovator which is none of them was a saint.

Steve Jobs became a good leader who have used his power to set the deadlines, influence people to work in long hours, create ideas of launching other new companies as soon as they could develop viable ideas which is the employees will got the rewards once they can convince him that their ideas were goods. This show that Jobs using reward power to influence his employees.

Jobs knowledge and skills helps him know what his customers wants. Furthermore, other big companies ask for his advice because of his personal characteristic and knowledge.

In year 1997, Apple was producing a random array of computers and peripherals including a dozen different versions of the Macintosh and after a few weeks of product review sessions, Jobs told his members to focus on for great products and from that he save the company.

Jobs tried at every meeting to find ways to cut clutter during the design of ipod interface. Tony Fadell who led the iPod Team said, Jobs redefined the problems or approach, and their problem would go away and Jobs made the simples of all suggestions.

When Jobs was designing the iPhone, he wanted its face to be a tough and scratchproof glass. Jobs then convince Wendell Weeks, the CEO of Corning that he able to do Gorilla glass in six months even though he knew he cannot afford it. But then, Weeks immediately making it after has brainwashed by Jobs and Corning was able to made it under six months.

1. Identify and explain ONE sources of power used by Jobs in the case study.

One sources of power used by Jobs in the case study is legitimate power. It is also known as positional power. Legitimate power is the power that a person in the organization holds because of his or her position and that is considered to be legitimate. A manager who leads a team has certain responsibilities and also the right to delegate tasks to her or his subordinates as well as review their work and give feedback. For legitimate power to be respected in an organization, the manager should be able and have the experience, expertise and qualifications that the job requires.

Others comply with the requests these individuals make because they accept the legitimacy of the position, whether they like or agree with the request or not. For example, Steve Jobs has enjoyed legitimate power as the CEO of Apple. He could set deadlines to his employees and they comply even though they think the deadlines were overly ambitious, and he used his power to influence people to work long hours week after week to help the company survive. This show that the employees follow his instruction because he has legitimate power.

2. Identify and explain influence tactics that can be used by Jobs to increase employee’ involvement in the organization.

Influence tactics that can be used by Jobs to increase employee’ involvement in the organization is persuasion. Persuasion is one of the most effective influence tactics for career success. The ability to present facts, logical arguments, and emotional appeals to change another person’s attitudes and behavior is just an acceptable way to influence others.

The effectiveness of

persuasion as an influence tactic depends on characteristics of the persuader, message content, communication medium, and the audience being persuaded. For example, Jobs persuade Wendell Weeks, the CEO of Corning to make Gorilla glass in six months because Weeks thought he can not make it in given time.

Next, Jobs also can use information control. Persuasion typically involves selectively presenting information, whereas information control involves explicitly manipulating others’ access to information in order to change their attitudes or behavior. It also can be used to reduce others uncertainty. For example, Jobs can install surveillance in the workplace to watch his employees’ action. Hence, they can change their attitude and do their best in work.

3. Discuss influence tactics used by Jobs to influence his employees.

The influence tactics used by Jobs to influence his employees is exchange. It involves the promise of benefits or resources in exchange for another party’s compliance with the request. Exchange is often embedded within networks, and this is how people maintain and use the networks they have built to exert influence. Exchange can involve proactively helping someone in the expectation that the favor will be returned or reminding people of past benefits or favors with the expectation that they will now make up for that debt.

Jobs rewards his employees in terms of pay and shareholder.

For

example, he created his company with idea of launching other new companies as soon as they could develop viable ideas. If member would convince him that their ideas were viable, he gave the company a maximum of $250,000 in seed money and gave the management team and employees a 30% stake in the company and the CEO 10% of the company. That way, everyone had a stake in the company.

If used, as a motivating factor, exchange can make employees work harder and smarter and contribute more effectively to the organization. But if this is used in an unfavourable manner and any kind of favouritism is displayed, then it can severely harm the morale of employees and reduce their productivity, leading to the wastage of company resources.

4. Refer to paragraph 5, in your opinion, what are the influence tactics that may be used by employees in order to survive in the organization.

In my opinion, the influence tactics that may be used by employees in order to survive in the organization is impression management. It is the process of actively shaping our public images. Other means, the perceptions and attitudes that others have of us. These public images might be crafted as being important, vulnerable, threatening, hardworking, rational, critical, or pleasant. For the most part employees routinely engage in pleasant impression management tactics to satisfy the basic norms of social behavior.

It is any attempt to increase liking by flattering boss in front of others, or helping co-workers with their work. By using this influence tactics, the employees will feel happy with their work and stay longer in the organization. For example, refer to the paragraph 5, the employees are smart people and they can get a top job at another place but they do not do so. This is because they feel comfortable to work with Jobs. Therefore, they complies Jobs’ instruction and do the job given. Indeed, Jobs and Apple had a string of hits over the past dozen years that was greater than that of any other innovative company in modern times.

5. Justify your opinion, were Job’s action in the last paragraph is considered as organizational politics? Justify your answer.

Organizational politics is self-serving tactics for personal gain at the expense of other people and possibly the organization. The conditions supporting organizational politics in the last paragraph is complex and ambiguous decisions. It is occurs when decision makers are given more discretion over resource allocation and use political tactics to influence the factors that might be considered in the decision making process.

In my opinion, Job’s action in the last paragraph is considered as organizational politics because Jobs convince Weeks to not worried when he said Corning was not making the glass and did not have the capacity to do Gorilla glass in six months. Jobs also has brainwashed Weeks that Corning can make Gorilla glass under six months even though he tried to explain that false sense of confidence would not overcome engineering challenges but Jobs did not accept it. He insisted Weeks could do it within the allocated time. Finally, it proven that Corning was able to made it under six months. This show that everything Jobs did is for his personal gain at the expense of other people.
