Answer the following questions based on the theory of Dollard and Pavlov.

1. What are the primary drives that we see in Jack’s life? The primary drives that we see in Jack’s life are his desire to get married and have a family. 2. How did Jack reduce these primary drives?

Jack reduced these primary drives by meeting Liz at school and eventually getting married. 3. What are the secondary drives that we see in Jack's life?

The secondary drives that we see in Jack’s life are his desire to obtain an AS college degree in restaurant management, thus giving him room to advance his career and improve his position at work as Jack felt that he had reached the pinnacle of his career at the restaurant and many of the women at work were looking for men with college degrees.

4. How did Jack reduce these secondary drives? Jack reduced these secondary drives by enrolling and getting started on his degree the following month. 5. Were there cues that told Jack how to respond in any of these situations?

After listening to some of the younger employees at the restaurant talking about college classes that they were taking, Jack was beginning to think that it might be a way to improve his position at work. He decided to talk to his supervisor at the restaurant about what steps he could take to potentially move up and his supervisor suggested that getting an AS degree in restaurant management would be a potentially great move. His supervisor told him what a good employee he was and how, with a degree, he believed Jack would go much farther in the company. This praise from his boss really meant a lot to Jack and he decided to get some information on colleges right away. The praise from Jack’s boss was a clear, signalling cue that had a significant impact on the trajectory of Jack’s life. 6. According to Pavlov, a stimulus is an event that provokes, or produces, a behavior response. Moreover, this occurs automatically, or reflexively, and that response is an involuntary reaction, I.e., the stimulus elicits an involuntary reaction.

According to Lesson: Classical Conditioning and Pavlov, Classical Conditioning happens when we begin to associate a neutral stimulus, I.e., one that does not naturally elicit a response, with an unconditioned stimulus, I.e., the stimulus that naturally elicits that behavior response (called an unconditioned response)....
